just got my first 300 Mag, a wedding gift from my wife :bigHug:

Elk being on the menu this fall, and seeing the good effects of the 200gr TSX in my 8mm Mag last fall on a nice 6 pointer, I decided to start there with the 300

Picked the new tipped version because it's cooler than the hollowpoint, and hit the range this evening

Grabbed a favorite powder, H4831sc and started at 66 grains, worked up to 70 grains and hit 2850 fps over the chrony which is plenty fast so I loaded a few more and tried some groups at 100 meters

1" 3 shot on the left, made scope adjustment and shot the pair on the right into about 1/4" :)

Shot a 3" 3 shot @ 200 meters, I think I will load up some more and try them at further distances. With the high BC of .546, it should do fairly well I think. Perfect bullet weight in the 300 Mag's IMO!

Todd,....I hate to be the one to break it to you but the neck is way too short on the 300 Winny to be a seriously accurate elk rifle...at least that's what I've read on the intraweb...:rolleyes:..another .030" of neck length would shrink those groups by at least a half inch...;):D

seriously though....nice rig....recoil must be pretty mild in that laminate #1...

you should be able to get a bit more speed though..I've had 200 grainers going over 2900 in a 24" 700....you have an extra 2" of barrel.

PS, didn't anyone tell you that your 6.5 Panther will kill an elk?:D..and congrats are in order...f:P:
 
I don't know what that thing is, it doesn't have a bolt or 700 in the name.


I'm also not sure I buy that a girl ever married you.

I call BS on the whole post...plus the throat is too short on the 300 for it to ever be a serious cartridge.

I have shot mmore than a few Brownings and rugers in the past that were chambered in stuff like the 7, 300, 338, etc.
The Ruger has enough weight to it that a "normal recoil" type of shooter can handle them, no sweat.

Nice rig, Pal! But I have to side with martinbns on this one.....:D

Im sure I could push it harder, but like I said 2850 fps is lots of velocity to get my out to 400 or 500 yards which is twice as far as Ive shot a big game animal in the past 15 years. :ar15: Recoil isnt bad, 9.5 lbs scoped and its noticeably tamer off the bench than my 8.5 lb 8mm Mag :) shooting 200gr @ 3000 fps
 
I am a huge proponent of the .300 mag with 200 grain bullets. In the past I have used Accubonds (favorite), Partitions and Speer Grand Slams. Probably shot more game with the 200 grain Grand Slam than any other caliber or bullet. I used to use IMR 7828, then switched to H1000 as it gave me a bit more velocity and gave up nothing in accuracy. That being said, I am with the fella who said that if using a TTSX, I would go lighter weight. I would drop to a 180 grainer and plow it faster.
 
I've used the .300 Win Mag quite a bit and my friend has used it almost exclusively for +20 years. I have not shot anything with a 200gr X, but he has. It was a big mulie - you know, the brutes that live in 7-10 - and he shot if from ~75 yards. The shot was head on and he recovered the bullet from the ham. So effectively the bullet passed through the entire length of the deer. Having said that he returned to his trusty 220gr Nosler Partition - which is also what I use. My load chronographs at 2850fps out of a 24" barrel and gives great accuracy. I use H1000 and 215 primers.

It is a great load and has accounted for countless moose, 3 grizzlies, mulies, whitetail, a couple of elk and some black bears too.

It is effective out to 300 yards or so, which is pretty much ok for most of us mere mortals. ;)

I was going to try the 180gr TTSX but after looking at the downrange ballistics, the 200gr TTSX is only going 60 fps slower @ 400 yards (2850 fps vs 3000 fps) with 3" more drop at 500 yards. I think it will be ok :) since most of my shots will be in the 25-200 yard range
 
My 300WM is my meat gun. With H4831 right under the book max. it gives me just under 1 MOA.

I switched from Partition to TSX four years ago and never look back.

Todd: I thought you are a WSM person and I am surprised that you are shooting WM. :p
 
I'm with the other folks who said 'go lighter'. With the Barnes there is no need to go beyond 180gr. I use 165 now in my '06, and they perform extremely well. there is a school of thought which says 180 is the max in .30 caliber magnums, otherwise get a bigger gun.
