2016 Berger Southwest Nationals

twosmokinspades, I know of 3 Open shooters and 1 FTR Shooter that are going for sure besides yourself. May be others.

If you are up for a team make sure to put your name on the pick-up board as soon as it is up.

Weather looks good.

Will be down from the 8th until the 20th.

Results and highlights from this match from a Fopen Canadian view, in my mind and this was from Saskatchewan but watching the scores daily on the net, are firstly the number of shooters they had attend. Including the sling shooters, there was close to 400 on the line by some reports. This meant for one of the first times in recent history, they had to run all 100 targets that exist on this fantastic range. Secondly was how close all the scores in all the classes were separating the winners each day and even more so in the Grand Agg. I was also very impressed with how our Canadian boys did down there, picking up over a dozen medals between these three shooters alone! For those that have never been south shooting, this is the match to go to, 5 days of shooting in heaven and over $70,000 in prizes! My only disappointment in this event is there are some prize tables that say "US SHOOTERS ONLY" on them. I say the prizes should be available for every shooter, let the non-US competitors figure out how to get it home. After all, we import actions, stocks, scopes and tools from the US all the time.

FOpen (sorry you FTR guys, I follow that too since my buddy Derek Rodgers shots that and even won the 2016 BSWN FTR division, congrats to Derek, who was also suffering from eye problems earlier this year, as I too have had, mine is still not 100% right yet... in FTR from Canada was Bill Watts and Barry Hamilton)

Wednesday, Day 1, 600 yds Mid Range Match
This is 3 sets of 20 shoots for score for a possible score of 600-60x. Now in all matches, there is only one Match winner, and he can comes from any of the classification classes, and in this case, the overall Match winner came from the Master class with a perfect score, 600 out of 600!

Match Winner in FOpen Master was Larry Taite with 600-39x.
First High Master was Kenneth Padilla with 599-43x

Stephen Baardsen (High Master) 597-11x (10th in HM)
Richard Dreger (Master) 593-36x (10th in Master)
Brian Sztym (Master) 588-23x (15th in Master)

Thursday, Day 2 (Team Palma day) Match 1, consisted of 3 sets of 15 shoots for score by four team members for a total possible score of 1800-180x. The Canadians, having only 3 Fopen shooters in attendance, formed a team by recruiting HIgh Master Steve Zock as their fourth.

The winning Fopen 4 man team was team Berger, dropping only 14 points in 135 shots, for a total score of 1786-104x. The Canadians, calling themselves the Cdn Minions, scored 1754-51x and placed 7th out of 19 teams. Nice work guys!

Friday, Day 3 was an Individual Palma and counts in the BSWN Grand Agg. I also think this was the highest wind day, but I could be wrong too. A Palma is a course of fire, 2+15 at 800, 900 and 1000 yds. The USA uses a decimal target so this means each yardage has a possible of 150-15x and a perfect Palama score AGG is 450-45x. This Palma is called match 2 in the BSWN and shows as the Palma Ind in the Grand Agg scoresheet.

This day may have been the only reason Stephen Baardsen did not actually capture the grand agg, in my estimation. Stephen loss 7 points at 1000 yds this day scoring only 143, were in the next several days, his average score at 1000 yds was 148 or above in the remainder of the BSWN! The winner of the BSWN Grand Agg, John Myers shot a 447-32x in this stage and this is where he gained the 5 point edge on Stephen.

Match Winner in FOpen High Master was Kenneth Padilla with 448-25x.
First Master in Fopen was Kenneth Livingood with 447-23x.

Stephen Baardsen (High Master) 442-15x
Richard Dreger (Master) 445-22 **6MA**
Brian Sztym (Master) 442-18x

Saturday, Day 4 - two sets of 20 for score, possible of 400-40x, making up match 4,5 and 6 as the day agg. This was a very closely contested match, with the first 17 places in HM separated by 5 points and x’s!

Match Winner in FOpen High Master was John Myers with 398-17x
First Master in Fopen was Richard Dreger with 397-15x

Stephen Baardsen (High Master) 397-21x **1HM** (200-12x **MW** and 197-9x)
Richard Dreger (Master) 397-15x **1MA** (197-5x and 200-10x **MW**)
Brian Sztym (Master) 390-10x

Sunday, Day 5 - Final Day, two sets of 20 for score, possible of 400-40x, a repeat of the last day.

Stephen Baardsen (High Master) 397-21x **2HM** (199-13x **4HM** and 198-8x **1HM**)
Richard Dreger (Master) 383-13x (197-6x and 186-7x - crossfired on 17th shot, ouch!)
Brian Sztym (Master) 397-17x **1MA** (199-9x **4MA** and 198-8x **1MA**)

1000 yd Agg results, possible 800-80x
Match Winner in FOpen High Master was Stephen Baardsen with 794-42x
Note: Stephen only drop 6 points in 80 shots at 1000 yds! That’s a 99.25% average, confirming his classification as a High Master and one of Canada’s best long range 1000 yds shooters!
Brian Sztym (Master) 787-27x (**8MA**)
Richard Dreger (Master) 780-28x

Grand Agg results, possible is 1250-125x
Match Winner in FOpen High Master was John Myers with 1240-65x
First Master in Fopen was Mark Roberts with 1236-56x

Stephen Baardsen (High Master) 1237-57x (**HiSr**)
Note: 8th overall out of the 124 FOpen shooters and give him those 5 points lost in the Individual Palma at 1000 yds, he would have 1242-57x and would have been the 2016 BSWN Fopen winner!
Brian Sztym (Master) 1229-45x (**8MA**)
Richard Dreger (Master) 1225-50x (would have been 3MA if he could have that 17th shot back)

One more thing guys, anytime you can shoot 397 out of 400 at 1000 yds, meaning you only dropped 3 points out of 40 shots fired, on a 10" 10 ring, you can shoot really good and all of these guys did this! Great shoot Stephen, Richard and Brian, I'm proud of you all and so happy you did so well!

that is an excellent showing from Canadian shooters.

I noted Steve and was tracking his performance through the days. great showing and he continues to improve.
hats off to Brian Sztym and Richard Dreger.

shout out to our F/TR guy(s) Bill Watts and Barry Hamilton... they did good and have a burning desire to improve.

Trevor

Yes, the FTR Canadians did good too, Bill Watts was 1EX in the 1000 yd agg in Export class with a 769-17x and picked up six of these placement tags by his name, like 1EX. Barry Hamilton had three by his name, also in FTR Expert class.

Congrats to all the Canucks at the match. Nice to see so many podium finishes... great job and in a very demanding group of shooters.

Reviewing the scores, this was the closest I have ever seen a match. Also, the overlap between F Open and FTR is in full swing.

fantastic showing for yourselves and canada guys!!!
thanks kodiak for breaking it down giving the perspective on the placings and shoot, lee

Okay this is a great review by Keith. BUT......

for those of us who do not really follow belly shooting that closely can someone start a thread with the basic meat and potatoes of how you get to be a Master, Expert etc etc in the classes. Seems to confusing to me.
