2016 - My Black Rifle shoots sub-MOA groups all day long challenge!

IMG_0756_zpsio8tfu0l.jpg

Trying the Berger 73BT... seems to be working.

Group #3 right in the middle.. 4rds awesome... WTF!!!!

Dont add test ammo to a mag with ammo already in it... That shot WAY out there is another load. Lots of colourful language after that 5th shot.

Took a bit to cool off for group #4.. apparently needed more calm time

Group 5 was better.

Light gusty head and cross wind so quite happy with how things are going.

Hopefully, I can get out again and retest and ONLY USE 1 AMMO ON THE BENCH AT A TIME.

GRRRR....

Jerry

Didn't take me long to find out some real problems in what is considered normal for AR barrel set up. I changed that for this barrel and Mcgowen was happy to comply...
A bit more then just free floating an AR barrel but it really isn't a huge change from the norm. Just a different way of looking at the problem...

Ok - I'll bite. Care to share? I'm genuinely interested in finding out what the USAMU has apparently missed (or maybe have tried and came to the conclusion it didn't make a bit of difference)?

Gas management is a big part of this as well as adjusting the buffer spring and buffer.

I've messed with different carriers, carrier weights and buffer/buffer spring combos to no effect that was worthwhile...at least nothing you can't accomplish with load development. Now, I can see using this approach for a specific load that works great in one rifle but one wants to use in another rifle that, say wants a bit more or less dwell for an example.

One more attempt... some gusty light winds, then some rain.

Berger 73gr BT, Varget, CCI 450, Win brass.

Heavy trigger pull and aiming error with that black diamond.. hard to really keep those breaks tight. Then a bit of wind. But there is an improvement and it is showing consistency with this Berger to be in the sub 3/4min range.

With 4rds clusters in that 1/2 min range... darn so hard to get that 5th shot in the group.

For this rifle, I am plenty happy with the result... now to test at 250yds when the snow melts.

Best group of the day.

Jerry

PS 9X 5rds group average from target here and in post #22... 0.664". That'll work

Hot damn! Jerry's on the board again with a sub-3/4 MOA submission! Damn fine shooting Jerry!

Added your name to the list. I'll see what I can dig up for ya as your prize. I was "this" close with my contact at Daniel Defense in getting them to donate some swag but looks like that plan fizzled out.

Hey, thanks for the GC.. that was a very pleasant surprise.

Muchly appreciated.

Hope other shooters will get their toys out for some fun. Love to see more positive results.

No probs. Nice to see someone claiming prizes and shooting some great groups <hint, hint CGNers>. Your second prize is in the mail. :)

Hi all,
Jerry suggested I post this target that was shot yesterday from my Bushmaster .308 MOE FDE
Range Report: Bushmaster .308 MOE FDE

I had originally posted it in the Precision Black rifle forum since I was not sure if this one included the "big brother" of the AR15.

I bought the gun from a fellow CGN'r (thanks again!) and set about acquiring some other items like a Bushnell Tactical Elite 5-15x40 scope and one piece Burris P.E.P.R. mount. I'm not a huge fan of recoil, so I mounted a Griffin Armament TacComp on the loud end. It came with a full set of indexing shims and was a snap to install. For added security, I like to use a dab of blue locktite on the 5/8x24 threads. It keeps things where you want them.
Compared to last winter, this one has turned into a really pussycat (Sucks because I'm a snowmobiler), so in order to maintain some modicum of sanity, I figured it would be a good day to punch holes in paper.

It was a bit windy (notice the mud all over the target from the makeshift stand blowing over) today and the temperature was a comfortable +2 C.
The first magazine got me roughly onto the bulls-eye, since I had laser bore-sighted the scope prior to today. A couple more mags and it was shooting quite well. I figured that the 147 gr. Winchester white box (craptastic) ammo was just junk, so I was not really expecting much. WOW! did it ever surprise me! just under 1" @ 100yds. And it was a 5 shot group. I had some 168 gr. hand-loads with me that I use for long range precision shooting and a mag of those printed well under an inch as well.
I read some reports about the poor quality and bad accuracy of Bushmaster .308's, but I'm happy to say that in this case those reports can easily be defended, at least in the case of this rifle.
It was a bit loose in the upper/ lower fitment, so I figured I'd throw in the Accuwedge that I had laying around. My Schmeisser AR15 M4F doesn't really need any snugging up, so it was surplus.
The reliability of this rifle has been great! It disassembles ammunition when the trigger is pulled and spits out the bones in a nice little pile a couple feet away to the right and slightly forward of the ejection port. Hell, even the brass groups are decent!
Thanks for viewing and if this post can help any of you in any way, then I'm happy to help.
CHeerz!

Griffin Armament Tac-Comp. Will accept a suppressor, but here in Canada that is a moot point.

I like the 5 target sheet because it assure that the 5 groups were done on the same sheet, maybe not on the same day but on the same sheet, one unique target can be redonne and redonne until success, then you only have to supply the 5 targets with MOA or better results, it's a lot harder to do it on one sheet since you have no second chance... Just saying... JP.:)
