2016 predator hunting

Blond coyote mousing in the field. Got to about 200yards for the shot. Wish we had snow like Toddbartel pics!

Way to go! Picked my niece up at the airport in Breslau last night and saw two coyotes in the field right by the airport entrance. Can't seem to find them when I'm looking for them though...

Well, there is about a 12" hole on the side you can't see, so I passed on this one for tanning. It was long but skinny female. I got another blond one couple weeks ago that's going to be a head mount.

Hmmm... bummer. What bullets are you using? I shoot Sierra 52gr. BTHP from my 22-250 and have had good luck not blowing them up too bad, in fact I usually don't get an exit even on broadside as long as I center-punch them.

Shooting superformance 50gr vmax, they are well under an inch @ 100 yards. This is the first one this year with an exit. I had good results with 40gr vmax in varmint express last year with no damaged hides. Shot a fox in the head at 200, didn't even exit, but hit 2 coyotes in the shoulder and had them run off. Figured the 50 might be a little better, but the one last week was 364, in the wind I held on his ass and hit him right in the shoulder. He went down but got up and ran off, I found him 2 days later when the snow melted. Ran about 400 yards. Front leg was busted up, bullet got to the lungs, they sure can cover some ground before they go down.

I've only tried the 52 bthp in my 223, should a white wolf right in the lungs at 175, flopped around and ran off. Never found it. Even the 75amax gave me mixed results in 223. Since then I've been determined to avoid match bullets for game. I know the 22-250 has a lot more horsepower, but still...

Do you do any baiting? or do you just show up call and move on after a certain time

I've called less than 10x this year without success. Shot one in 20 stands last year. Its tough in the Windsor area, a lot of guys call and I think they're immune to the sounds around here. Of 6 this year, one off deer stand, one calling turkeys, 3 spot and stalk. Pushed 2 to a buddy out of a small wood lot.

I've always loaded 55gr bullets @ 3660fps in my 22-250 but gave 50gr V-Max a try a few weeks ago.

I am loading the 50gr V-Max with 34.5grs IMR4064 powder I am getting 3860fps and 4 shots touching at 100 yards so just bought from Reliable in Vancouver arrived today in the mail two more boxes of 50gr V-Max.

Can hardly wait to get out and give these a try.

I load 40gr V-Max in 223 super accurate but performance beyond 150 yards has a lot to be desired mind you any bullet out of a 223 has a lot to be desired beyond 150 yards...

i tried hand full last year (just calling got response once but nothing came in)

this year i will try a bait spot and see what she gives, and will also try driving around to see of any signs!

I usually start with pack locator which is a pack yapping away.

Then to snowshoe rabbit distress.

Then I'll bump around to female invitation for a while then rabbit or vole even fawn in distress I'll then try a challenge howl etc.

But rabbit in distress is your friend as long as you aren't in an area where the coyotes are trained that the sound is from humans.

I haven't used pup in distress or female whimpers much will add them in the future.

a few pics from this year.
one of my early ones. the view was so awesome i had to share it.

with the warm weather there seems to be a lot with what my fr buyer calls "wolf mange" huge loss of guard hairs on the shoulders and neck.

how to get looks on the hwy step 1. making a trip to the fur buyer. I usually get a tarp over them but my tarp was froze into the snow/ice and i was feeling lazy

Because dealing with other peoples lack of understanding can be far more aggravating than the trouble it takes to not have to deal with it in the first place.

^^^this^^^ in my experience people in the city get mad and offended over pretty much anything and arguing or trying to reason with them is like trying to drink water from a sieve. Heck i even had a friend of mine ready to punch me after seeing a fb post of a coyote because "wolves are endangered and they are cute peacefull creatures".....uhhm what?

Years ago the hunter trainers started teaching us to cover up our guns and kills stating out of sight out of mind we now know that we caved into the anti's by doing this and it now works against us.

I have now made a personal decision to never go out of my way to cover up firearms or game that I legally own or have taken I will never cave in again.
