2017 Ontario Spring Wild Turkey season

Here he is. Taken down around 730am. Looks like an old jake/young tom? Fan was flush but the middle two feathers were slightly different colour.

Good job... there is no such thing as an "old jake." A jake is a male bird from last years brood. What you shot is a two year old tom... good eats for Holiday Monday!

I finally connected with a Tom while my daughter was with me, after numerous suscessful deer hunts, she was just commenting about how we just don't have any luck with turkeys... Then we spotted this fella

I brined the bird for 48 hours in a mixture of Kosher Salt and Brown Sugar.
I then injected the breasts with Jerk marinade and rubbed the entire bird with jerk seasonings, fridged it for another 24 hours.
Deep fried and came out delicious, mouths watered.
I had removed one leg/thigh and slow cooked it in a crock pot, it was nothing to write home about, used it in a Turkey A La King rice recipe.

Had to conceed one of the legs/thighs for a hearty soup this evening. The little one had been up all night with a stomach bug, coupled with a rainy dreary day meant soup was number one on the list for the turkey.

Added rice and the regular soup ingredients. It was delicious and was just what the doctor ordered for our little tot.

Finished up my season with two nice Toms. Shot first one April 26th, 20 lbs, 10 1/4" beard and matching 7/8" spurs. Second one was May 9th, 18.75 lbs, 10 3/16" beard and matching 1 1/8" spurs. Both birds taken from same field, the pair had the run of the field before season and only seems right they get to share the freezer together!

Lots of great birds!

I'm curious as to what the harvest numbers will be like for 2017 now that they've opened the season up to everyone with a hunting license. Will the number of birds harvested double? 15% increase? I'm genuinely curious.

If it were possible, Id be more curious to know how many birds were taken without tags, not reported, fatally wounded or how many hens fell to the ground this season. Unfortunately I didnt have an opportunity to do a lot of turkey hunting this season, but the few times I was out, I heard an abnormal amount of local shooting. Im talking duck season type shooting. In speaking with the neighbour who was out multiple times weekly, he agreed with my observation. We'll see how the turkey numbers continue to do in the future. Hearing many people say, including many on this site, that they refused to take a course because of the $30 cost doesnt make me feel too comfortable believing they would have forked out the $30 for a tag or the cash to pattern their guns. Im not implying that the course was a be all and end all, but not taking it because of a fee doesnt instill confidence that one would pay for a tag either. In reality, one would spend more on patterning a shotgun with shell/choke combos then the cost of the course fee. Maybe people also cut corners on that front and hence the reasons for warzone like shooting during a turkey hunt.

We never heard a lot of shooting all season thankfully. I don't thing there is going to be that big of a difference this year. Most hunters want to do the right thing.

If 20 % is the published success number 80 % are to dumb to out smart a turkey.I am near a city and the hunting numbers seemed to be the same maybe a new guy or two or just a guy moving to a new area. You can shoot a hen anytime you want if you are poaching why do it during the season.I think the success numbers will be the same and the 80 % will be likely be the same. There are turkey hunters and guys that buy a tag and go out once and call them self turkey hunters.
I think turkey contests cause more poaching than anything from my information.

I was out very early this morning at a place we've only hunted a couple times this season, that always has birds. Or at least it did every other time out so far, but not this morning. Little wet and foggy, and not a peep. Packed up, and my buddy says he's done, season's over, it's too late, they're not gobbling, etc. It was only 7:00, so I decided to try another place, and check my trailcams there anyway. Spot a couple of toms strutting in dry fields on the way, including 1 about 4 fields away from the farm I have permission on. Called my friend and told him there was a strutter to try and lure over, and he said good luck, he was already home. Take another look, grab the camera, snap some pics and make sure it isn't somebody's decoy. Might as well try.....

I snuck in, set up a jake and a laydown hen, at about 7:45 am, and got ready. Called about every ten minutes, quiet sequence in case something was close, then a louder one. Nothing. Did this every 10-15 minutes for about 45 minutes. Maybe he can't hear me? Maybe he is stuck in the dry field, maybe he knows better, doesn't want to get wet, who knows. One more try, yelp, yelp, gobble. Right there. Can't see the decoys.....soft purrs, clucks, hen talk...gobble, gobble, GOBBLE. I can't see him from inside the blind, but he is right on me, reverberating, spitting, strutting, o man, my hands are shaking. Am I new? Can't decide, camera or gun. Camera or gun? Where is he? Another gobble. This is taking forever. Where is he? Why did I put the decoys so close? Is he gone? GOBBLE., nope. Pressing my luck, I get the camera up just in time for him to turn the corner, completely strut right past the jake decoy, and straight to the hen. Totally ignores the jake, no pecking or wing slaps, no foreplay with the hen, no strutting and turning, she's ready. He's ready. He climbs right on the hen decoy and starts the old side to side dance. I'm to mesmerized to press the shutter.

Alright, snap out of it, time to stop screwing around with the camera and get the gun up. I'm in one of those chair blinds that are sold to hunters, but don't have enough room for anything more than a coffee and a thermacell. Why did I buy this thing? My short barrel 870 is too long. I could never use my crossbow in this thing. It's like sitting in a lawnchair with a garbage bag on top. And not the big contractor size either. Set the camera down, makes some noise as it falls over, and try to get the gun up and out the front. He's not as distracted with his inflate-a-mate as I hoped, and sees my motion, and is off the hen in a flash, and starts the retreat. But not for long.
9:00 and my wet tom is on the ground. They sure don't look as nice when they're wet, but he'll taste just as good.

It's wet and buggy, and harder to hear and see with everything leafed out, but if you're still looking to fill a tag, stay at it, and Good Luck!

Interesting theory! I know i heard 10 shots behind my buddy and I the first time we went out. Just like you described, duck season type shooting! I bet those guys had stocked up on Longbeards and saw a bird at 40 yards with an unpattern gun and went to town until it was in to the next field and out of sight.

Great photos guys! Keep them coming! My turkey season has been a wash.... too many ill relatives. I'll head back out for the fall hunt.
