2018 Wild Turkey Season

Now Patrick has the pleasure of chasing another turkey to try and top his first. No easy feat now that he set the bar so high.

Always start with the smallest jake you can find... maximize the excitement as you work your way up the pecking order... ;)

My first wild turkey. Been hunting turkey for 4 years without harvesting one so this is awesome. Opening day at 10 am. A lull in the rain and this guy came out with another male to the decoys. My buddy and I almost had a double. 9 inch beard, spurs just over 3\4 inch. Didn't have a scale but guessing 20-22lbs.

Well done. The field looks pretty familiar....a muddy soup bowl like the ones many of us were in on opening day

Good job partner... good on you for sticking with it... turkey hunting isn't always a instant gratification sport.

Congrats on your first turkey! Look at those fields....what a soggy mess. Why couldn't we have today's sun for opening day?

Thanks. Yeah, we were in a blind so we were keeping dry. Past years it has never worked for out for me to pull the trigger. Last year I was with 2 buddies who shot nice Tom's, year before that just too busy to get out enough. This year my buddy said it was my turn no matter what. Awesome!

Got out for my season opener today. Shuffled my schedule to hunt mode at 10pm last night so not much prep work. No problem as I love the run n gun. Sure enough I have to stumble around in the twilight for an extra half k as there was a truck parked at my planned starting spot.
Plunked my butt down with a slate beside me. Answered some gobbles from the other end of the block approximately 700 yards. 2 or more toms gobbling over each other began closing the distance. They came in on a string until they hung up at a hill about 100 yards from me. We chatted about what I was wearing and the colour of my lingerie. One of these boys liked what he heard and they suddenly went silent. . I got the full show at 20 yards as Tom looked desperately for his new hen. Unfortunately he was too far to my right to line him up without turning my ass so it became a battle of patience. Eventually he strutted far enough around me that I got an awkward shot off and his date was ruined.
For the detail lovers. 21# 9.5”b 1.25”s. Extrema 2 with jellyhead. federal 3.5”#6.

Got this nice Tom yesterday. Day one of season was wet and saw and heard zip. Day two I went out once the rain and overcast cleared. Was there for an hour and abit with a spread of a hen and Jake. Made calls with no response so packed the call up and was about to leave leaned forward to get up and looked left and this Tom was sneaking in 20 yards out. After I moved he stopped for a min then carried on. He walked behind a small tree and gun up so once he passed boom flop, first bird for 2018 season. Was awfully close to being busted but I’ll take him nice Tom.

Let me know if the image works if not follow the link not sure why it’s not working.

I was stuck working dayshift the last couple days. Working nights tonight and tomorrow so my only chance was to get out this morning. I have been watching this tom for the last month. He had about 10 hens with him and was the lone tom in a very small block so I set up in the dark on the lee side of the wind with a full strut decoy and two hens. On fly down he landed about 5 feet behind me and gobbled. Scared the daylights out of me. He jumped the log I was leaning against and was no more than 3 feet from my left side, all I could do was freeze and stare straight ahead. Crazy thing is my heart beats faster with these birds than it does when a 300 plus bear comes in. He charged my tom decoy and started spurring it like it stole something. Shot him at 15 yards.

Remington 1187 turkey sp with a remington extra tight turkey choke and Kent 3" #4 turkey load.

I love it when a plan comes together!!
