2021 Coyotes

It would appear that those 105gr A Max worked well. No blood splatter, minimal hide damage?

There was some big entry and exit holes, but nothing that didn't get stitched up nicely

Whack a couple with your M70 22 creed to prove that it works, then sell it to me!

That rifle didn't belong to me! I was just getting it dialed for a buddy

Well I’m jealous.

Which caliber do you prefer?

22 Creedmoor for sure, it will probably see the majority of use next winter. I am out of the 80.5gr Berger so will change it up to either the 85.5gr Berger or the Hornady 88gr ELDm. The detach mag on the Tikka is nicer than the floorplate on the 6mm, for those days where I was in and out of the truck more often. I ordered the 5 round extended Tikka mag too after emptying the 3 round mag on wolves earlier this winter

Ah! Well your friend has good taste.

You should throw some Ctr bottom metal on that thing. 10 rounds incase you get in a real dust up with a pack

First stand in a long while was a producer!

Mid morning I hiked 1/4 mile into a spot I found the day before when looking for deer sign. Good amount of coyote tracks in the snow. I placed the Foxpro upwind of me 50 yards on top of a haybale and tucked myself in the shade along the edge of the brush. I started with 3 female howls spaced a minute or so apart. I then played snowshoe hare distress for about 5 minutes. I had good results last winter with a coyote wrestling sound, so I tried that. No action, surely there is coyotes within ear shot. It’s about the 30 min mark now on the stand, I try jackrabbit distress for a few minutes...still nothing. Towards the end of a stand I always play some pup distress. I let it roll around 5 mins and then was going to sit for 10 more minutes before leaving. I switched it to rodent distress, just loud enough I could hear it, then I back the volume down 1 more notch. About 5 minutes pass and I spot a coyote to my 11 o’clock , entering the corner of the field . It stops and is surveying. It occasionally looks behind it. These coyotes still get me revved up, heart was pounding a bit haha...Whenever it was looking away I sloooowly position shooting sticks over. It finally commits and begins to trot in, stopping quartering to at 120 yards. One shot with the 260 Remington 140gr Sierra TGK and the fur was flying. 44 minute stand. Another good lesson in patience, I wonder how many coyotes I've walked away from on the 20 minute sits

I have wondered the same about those longer sits. Last winter it took 45 min to draw in a pair that just wanted to take their time. I hate to think how many coyotes I'm educating by taking short stands.

Shot one last night with my 6.5 Rem Mag at 300 yards... dropped straight down and never twitched, as you would expect.

My average stand length on successful call-ins is 24 minutes. Overall my average stand length is 29 minutes

If the conditions are good, you were able to access the stand without being seen heard or smelled, and there is good fresh sign around - sitting longer is probably a smart choice. Some of my area is hard to access especially when the snow starts to stack up. If I snowshoe in a mile, you can be damn sure I'll sit longer than 20 minutes haha. In some areas though, run and gunning with more stands (shorter in length) in a day is likely a better tactic. It's a numbers game. That's not my type of terrain unfortunately!

It's a tough line to walk for sure. I avg somewhere around 20 min stands because lots of after work stands only account for one sit so I make it count. If I have a whole day to call the stands get shorter to fit more in one day. I have the terrain to allow that though.
