2024 Wild Turkey Thread

Well got out yesterday before first light. Two buddies with me. One has never harvested a bird the other quite a few. First stand took a while but the hens I called in brought in two nice Toms with them. Watched the show for quite sometime hoping the Toms would separate giving both guys a bird. They didn’t wanna split up so experiencevd hunter dropped the hammer at 22 yards. Back to the house to clean the bird and regroup. Try calling from a few spots with no responses. Check out a farm and see a nice Tom in the middle of a high field separated from an equally sized field with a ridge running east to west. Enter the lower field and set up on the ridge. Not ideal but our only choice without being seen. A few en yelp and some purring and the Tom comes running over the ridge almost into the lower field. Now at 5 yards on the left side of the inexperienced turkey hunter. With patience and what seemed like forever the strutting Tom headed for the decoy in front of the now successful turkey hunter. Bird was shot at 6’yards. First bird and it was double bearded, larger beard was 4.5”and the smaller one 2”. Great day IMG_0511.jpgIMG_6755.jpg

My son's first turkey. 10 min after opening light. 20ga Mossberg 500. Proud papa taking pic.

Congrats! What an awesome feeling, eh? Almost better than bagging your own. I've had a very similar feeling watching my youngest brother become a successful hunter. He took home his 3rd consecutive turkey today (pictured above). I remind him often that a pupil is only as good as his teacher, and I'm damn good, lol.

Got him! My first :)

Congrats! You'll never forget the first one.

I'm switching to crossbow next year to change things up and add a little degree of difficulty.

Hooks... I love big hooks. I have about 8 legs still in the back of the freezer waiting to cut the spurs off. Wifey hates when she forgets what's in the bag and opens it up for a look Laugh2

Hesus pal. If shes ur partner I dont blame you a bit. In all seriousness I wish you great luck Brent. Not that youll need it. Awesome youve included/introduced a lady too the joys of hunting and becoming part of the landscape or rather seeing it from a different perspective! Best wishes for the both of you or your hunting party.
