.204 vs .223

I shoot an old stevens .243 for yotes and never been happier.

I had a tricked out .223 AR and liked it but not in the wind.

I personally wouldn't be interested in yote hunting with a.204.

Are you saving fur or just blasting dogs??? What bullets are you shooting, and what's the damage???

If you are asking me. In the Southern U.S mostly culling/cropping. In Ontario Im not allowed here to dispose of without skinning unless mangy.

My rifle so far(30 yrs) seems to only shoot Win x2432 100 gr pwr. pt. accurately.

Sometimes damage is not too bad(easily sewn) and sometimes it is just lips and tailhole. Mostly depends on me and my fundamentals.

Skypilot^^^^ Yes I was asking thanks for filling me in. That’s kind of what i was thinking im getting the same with my 243, sometimes minimal damage others it’s just a bloody mess, tried the 55grs and had bad accuracy and big holes in dogs. Off topic a little how the coyote population in the US?? Out of control like Canada?? or worse??

With the right load, .243 Win is an excellent coyote fur taker...

Adri... try Hornday 58 grain V-Max Moly rounds (make sure that they are the MOLY's)... out of our guns they are very accurate and seem to do a lot less damage to hides.

Thanks for the tips "Hoytcanon"^^^^. I could not agree more the 243 is an awesome coyote gun. Up north here we have lots of beautiful white coyotes and the 243 is a little unforgiving. I’ve tried everything under the sun and all the lighter gr bullets I had terrible accuracy (6" groups at 200 yard and they where consistent between me and my bro) Now im shooting 70gr blitz kings and my bro is shooting the 75gr hornadys, seams to be working the best for our guns. 75gr giving the best group, i will give the 58grs Molly coated a try!!

The coyote issue is as it is in Canada, bad and worse. In the Southeast they pack and run cattle into fences, break the cattles legs and necks then feed at leisure. They come into yards and leave only the dog's head, collar and chain.

West is just as bad, small dogs, but many miles to a fence.
Easier to call. 1-2 per sq. mile

Agree on the accuracy.
I shot yesterday, Cold Bore shots only and tried Federal 55g Nosler Ballistic Tip.

I could barely keep them inside a 5" circle at 100 yds. Yet the Win X2432 100gr Pwr Pt was inside a dime at 100yd Cold Bore

I would love to shoot the smaller stuff but when you can't hit a bull in the butt with 55gr whatya do? I suspect it has to do with the barrel twist in my .243

The problem is bullet length vs barrel twist... light bullets are generally shorter bullets and require a more open twist rate so they don't "spin-out." But inspite of this... our 1:10" barrels are very accurate with the Hornady Varmint V-Max Moly 58 grain...

Goodchoice.Glad you did not listen to so called experts that give their vast ,reading attained knowledge.Try it out in the real world and judge, accordingly.Hope you enjoy.

anyone ever try 50 grain or heavier bullets in a 204?
any results to share? I have been entertaining the thought of 50's in mine, just haven't taken the plunge.

Yep, shooting the 50 gr Berger in a 1 in 10 twist Pac-Nor Super Match barrel. Loving it. :D Still shoots the lighter stuff (e.g. 32 gr) just fine. Personally, I think the .204 Ruger cartridge is probably better suited overall to a 1 in 10 or 1 in 11 instead of the typical 1 in 12.
