22-250 or 222?

I would choose the .22-250 as I am a contrary old fart. I have owned 5 .223s over the years. One the government has forbidden Two were innacurate POS (Mini 14 and a CVA single shot) two remingtons that were tack drivers, but both had feeding problems that no one could fix. My current varmint rifle is a 6.5 x 55 Zastava M70. Out performs the creed with both light and heavy bullets. Should have kept the first one I had almost 50 years ago and skipped the .223. No regrets with the .22-250 I owned either.
Outperforms the CREED 🤪🤥

They eat dogs in the Philippines and China and probably other countries. So not that far fetched I guess
Northern Canada too, when I was a younger man. Ive owned 4 22-250's, down to two. One standard and one Ackley with a faster twist. Both are more accurate than me. I've had 3 triple deuces, still have two. more accurate than the 22-250's, but lacking the range of the latter. I have hmm, maybe a half dozen 223's, half of which the government says are too dangerous to use. And a plethora of 22 wildcats over the years, 223 AI, 22-243 Middlestead, both versions of the CHeetahs, a 224 Clarke. probably some others I've forgotten. The 22-250 is probably the best all around cartridge in that bore size for hunting varmints. With the right bullet, it can be used for deer. It would be my choice. - dan

Pros cons? Obsolete? Couple of rifles I'm thinking of. The 22-250 is a savage axis and the 222 I'm waiting to hear more about. Reloading is probably the only real option for either.

The .222 brass isn't as common, but far from obsolete.

I believe most of them don't have an overly fast rate of twist similar to the 22-250.

Depends on what you want. The 22-250 is in a whole other class. It's around 700 FPS faster with a 50 gr bullet. But again limited a bit by having to stick with lighter bullets.

You mentioned that the LR primer use was a plus, but to me these lately are just about twice the price, and harder to come by.

.222 would be a dandy lightweight walking varminter with milder report, long barrel life, and cheap to feed. But if you want to zap stuff at longer range, the 22-250 has the edge.

Everyone needs a mild walking varminter small game gun, so I like the .222. And maybe a longer range varminter too... but I thought I wanted a 22-250, until I realized the .243 can do everything it can, but better, and also an easier stretch into big game.

About 300 FPS faster with a 55 gr. and going up to 65, 75 gr varmint bullets can really leave it behind at long range.

I'd forget the Axis.

This is getting me kind of interested in. 222 as well since I’ve recently caught the reloading bug and I have been seeing some Sako over and under 12 gauge. 222 on intersurplus
Has anybody had experience with those? Would it be better to just get a dedicated one versus the combo?

Those combos are nice survival guns. Bought a Tikka .222/12 combo.

Depends on what you like. For me, I 100% leave the house with the wrong gun, so it was a good compromise, or maybe the ultimate grouse gun.

Or deer/grouse/coyote depending on the load(s).

Im starting to like and lean towards the 222 from the info here. Getting curious to see what the rifle is. Find out next week or so. My other rifles are 308 and 22lr sounds like a 222 will have a place in between there
