22 advice

I had a pre-remington Marlin 60 that worked flawlessly with decent accuracy. If you wanted one to take a beating I would get a older used Model 60. For a nicer one I would get one of the new CZs.

Marlin 795, period. I've had a 10/22, and I'll never buy another. I ran my 795 for hours this past weekend, digested everything I fed it, very accurate and not a single hiccup. Just a delightful rifle, and an absolute steal for $150. Contemplating a second one.

X2 on new, or used?

For new, Can't go wrong with (as suggested) Marlin 60/795. Remington 597 is a great one too. I have a wekaness for the 64's. but in the "new gun world", they seem to be priced as high/higher than the Marlin n' Remington offerings.

For used, there are lots of gems. The 'ol adage "They don't make 'em like they used to" seems proven.

Someone mentioned Remi Nylon 66.... I would advice to stay away from it. It may become unrielable and inaccurate. Also its 'plastic' stock can crack easilly when handled too rough. It is however light and fun to shoot 'rapid fire' when the feeding works, it's a real blast!!

So despite of what's written above, if you can get one under $150 - get it.

Marlin 795 (shot my friends gun, I liked it just fine, in fact it just feels nicer to me than my 597)
Savage 64 (new version of my dads old sears 22 that has been a good plinking gun for 30 years) (And probably made in Canada!)
Remington 597 (I have one its reliable and accurate)
CZ 512 (no experience i'm sure its great)
Keltec SU-22 (shot one once, very cool little gun, kind of expensive)

I still see TC R-55's in LR kicking around... My LGS has a stainless synthetic on the rack... They are very nice guns... I have been on a hunt for one in HM2 for a few years... No luck yet... I'll keep an eye open.
