.22 Conversion Kit for M1911 - should I buy a Kimber?

Hi guys,

I have just got my first handgun - Nork 1911-A1 .45 ACP. I don't know whether it is a good beginner's gun, but I am a 1911 fan, and I bought it anyway just to start shooting with it.

Because my wife wants to come to the range with me, and also for my own plinking, I am now thinking about getting a .22 conversion kit for the 1911. In the U.S., there seems to be a number of manufacturers/brands of conversion kits. But in Canada, is Kimber the only choice we have?

And, I see that The Shooter Edge has the Kimber conversion kit on its price list for $399. Is it a fair price? Or is there anywhere else that I can buy one (especially in BC)?

Please let me know your comments on using a Kimber conversion kit on a Nork 1911 frame (which looks a little rough). Thank you in advance....

Here is my new gun:

TSE's price on the Kimber Conversion is very fair. I've seen them at the same price or a little higher in Ontario. Can't say about BC.

I can't think of an apparent reason it wouldn't work on your Norinco. My conversion works well on my S&W1911 although the Smiths and Kimbers share a common ancestry and are very similar.

Mine is 100 per cent reliable if subsonic rounds are avoided. I like Winchester Super-X or CCI in mine. The conversion is a tackdriver. Mine shoots as well as a S&W Model 41 that I used to own.

I've also considered getting a .22LR conversion kit.

But for $399 (for the kit) you might want to get a .22LR HG instead and start building your collection. It may turn out to be cheaper to go this way and you and the missus can shoot at the same time!

Good luck....

the way i look at it is this- get a good 22 handgun, then if you get a "spare" 45 or whatever and can leave it converted, then get a conversion kit so you can at least use the frame, in other words, a 22 hand gun, a 45 and a converted 45 or whatever- 3 guns-

Thank you guys for your suggestions.

My problem is that for .22 pistols I like are P22 and Sig Mosquito, but they both have the stupid long barrel sticking out of the slide. And they are pricy. Maybe I should get a .22 revolver...

I have a ceiner kit. It's little finikie with the ammo used. I use American Eagle cheapies and it works flawlessly with my Norc 1911

Conversion kits are generally much less accurate than dedicated .22LR handguns. They also tend to be less reliable. For $400, you are better off buying something like Ruger Mark III in my opinion.

Have you personally tried the Kimber unit or possibly one from Marvel?

I think a blanket statement about conversion units being "generally much less accurate" and "less reliable" is misleading unless you have hands-on experience with the model being discussed.

I own a Kimber and have shot it against a Ruger Mark III. If I felt the Ruger were better I'd own one. I kept the Kimber.

.22 kit

I have a Kimber unit that I use on a Norinco 1911 and no complaints here. I actually enjoy having one less certificate to look after and the ability to have the exact same trigger and grip as my .45acp. I've thought of getting a kit for the Browning Hipower but have no experience with them.

I have nothing against the Rugers however and I'm sure they are great little guns.

why not? the only one uses 15 rounds mag.:p

I've used the ceiner mags with a Kimber unit. I would imagine that you could do the same here too. Ceiner units don't have a great reputation for reliability, and they provide zero service support.

I emailed marvel last week and they said they don't have any dealers in Canada but would ship to Canada.
They also said that it would cost an extra $100.00 for export bullsh#%
I asked but have not heard back yet if the $100.00 charge is per piece or per order?
Maybe buying several will bring down the price?

SIR in Winnipeg also has them. One was in the display case last time I was there.
