just curious what you guys have had better luck with for lighter bullets (33 tnt and 35 vmax), h 110 or w296? seems like these are the 2 top powders for the light stuff, while lil gun looks to be tops for the 40 and esp the 45 gr bullets.

shhhhh - don't tell anyone, but these two powders are exactly the same thing ;)

Olin (winchester) makes both. Actually Olin manufactured all Hodgdon's ball powders under contract until Hodgdon bought out Olin. The only differences you'll see between 296 and 110 are the same as any differences you'll see between 2 different lots of 110

I like lil gun for everything in the Hornet. Never really tried 296/110. Been meaning on trying H4227 for it's temperature stability

I have owned 3 hornets over the years and the best powder I ever used was
AA1680.Shot the best groups and good velocity.

that was the next powder that caught my eye, looks good for the 45 grain bullets, but if i can get lil gun to shoot those well i wouldn't look back due to its low pressure.

I have 2 thoughts on lil gun.

One - it seems to be a rather dirty powder, perhaps owing to the low working pressures in this application
Two - it's a double base powder with nitroglycerin (like most ball powders) - this powder burns hot. I have a suspicion that a single base powder such as 4227 would allow more shots between cooling sessions. The barrel gets quite toasty after 5-10 lil gun loads.

I use W296 with a 40 grain VMax in my Hornet (CZ) and find it to be a very accurate combination with velocity at the upper end of what that cartridge can do.

Plus, being a ball powder, it meters very consistently.
