Hey everyone,

I'm relatively new to guns and am looking to buy my first .22 rifle. I'm interested in any of the lever action Henry guns but am open to other options.

I live in a city where rifle use is not permitted but have read that cb and bb caps are nearly silent. As a result, I like the idea of a rifle that I can use in the city limits with subsonic ammo and out of the city limits with more powerful ammo.

I'm also interested in power and accuracy though and have been reading about wmr rifles. I would get a wmr over an lr in a second as long as there is some kind of ammo that could offer the quietness of cb or bb. My main question is this: is there such a thing as wmr cb or bb ammunition? Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't buy a WMR unless I was hunting and needed the extra power, or it was being shot through a gun that could take advantage of the added range of WMR. 22LR is very accurate depending on the gun and ammunition and gives you the option of cheap ammo.

WMR is much, much louder than LR. The performance is much, much better as you can reach out to 200 yards with the WMR, but have no chance in hell of doing it with the LR.
The WMR is for actually hunting coyotes, rabbits and other varmints, while the LR is more about shooting squirrel type animals and just having fun target shooting with ammo that costs about $0.05 per shot compared to $0.25 on a good day with the WMR.
Everyone should have at least one or two 22LR rifles, but there are so many other calibers similar to the WMR that you have a lot of options open to you.

I would not say that... My club does a metal "Piggy shoot" every Saturday on our 200 yard range.

.22LR only. The metal pig target is about 3" across, 10 sighter shots, and 10 shots for score, and I think the usual high score is 8 or 9 out of 10 on a calm day.

Food for thought.

It's been about twelve years since I've fired CB's through a .22, but from what I remember, they aren't a 'silent' round. There are obviously more qualified shooters on here that have used this ammo recently, but I remember them being louder than a pellet gun by quite a bit, and for that reason I would hesitate to shoot them within city limits with hopes of not alerting any neighbours.

buy a good quality .22 lr, keep it for life , you can always buy a .22 hornet instead of the 22 wmr,, the magnum has never interested me because of cost , but a good ,22lr is hard to beat ,,wade

I do not know where you get your info, proonur....I have been shooting a .22 Mossberg 144 lsb to well over 200 yards. Not a 12" x 12" steel gong or a paper target. I shoot gophers and with that small target, I deem it comparable to a 2" bull at 200. Some shots have been over 200 and successful. If you do a search, it has been shown that shots over 300 yards are quite common for the .22 LR.

I have never seen the need of a .22WMR for any reason, more power for what? The rifle only shoots to the capabilities of the shooter. 200 yards or beyond for my "lowly" .22 can be appreciated by many that will soon arise I am sure.

The 22lr is perfect for target and plinking. You can shoot all day for peanuts. If you ever get a revolver like a Ruger Single Six or a similar make then you have the option of changing cylinders from 22LR to 22 WMR. You won't find shorts or CB caps in WMR

A lot depends on barrel length....:)

I personally would not waste any money on a 22, I have 3 and they sit and collect dust!

The .22's come out to play when all the (more) expensive ammo's been shot away....;)

If they are just sitting, put them up for sale and let some avid .22 shooters enjoy them. I would rather shoot .22 than my .222 but they are a very close choice to make. Cheap and fun....with a .22 , a person can shoot all day and not have to spend over $25.00 for ammo. 40 shells in most calibers cost about the same or more.

2'' at 200 yds? With a .22LR? You're the man!

:feedTroll: guys... post count is 4, and he is asking which is the best caliber to break the law with?!?

either he is a complete idiot who posts on a public forum that he is intending to commit a crime, or an anti-spy or "journalist" for CBC, or some Rag.

either way he is saying :ban:

The city I live in is very rural, and I live in the northern limits. You are allowed to use a shotgun. I originally considered buying a good pellet gun for pest (squirrel) control but that would still technically be considered breaking the law at over 500 fps. I've heard cb and bb cap ammo for .22s only slightly exceeds 700fps and is quiet. Maybe I should just be a good law abiding citizen and use 12 ga slugs at over 1000 fps.

Peterborough's bylaws are a lot more permissive than I'd initially thought ! ;)

I think you might live a bit north of it :yingyang: , actually ?
