.22 LR Semi Rifle Recommendation

Remington's 597 has proven to be a solid, reliable rifle as well.

We have a 597 and can recommend it, too. It doesn't like the big 25-round banana mags, though, but with the stock 10-round mag it's stoppage-free.

I agree with the others that the 10/22 is better made, but I just wasn't a fan of the shape of it. Here's the shorty 597 with "heavy" (relative) barrel.

I think the little Browning SA comes around when one can appreciate the finer things in life. No doo-dads, rails , lasers, lights, bi-pods etc. It's in a class of it's own and not to be thrown into the pile of cookie cutter wanna bees. Unfortunately I don't own one yet.

For anyone looking for a really inexpensive .22 look at the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I had trouble with the mag at 1st then bought a 25 rd mag. Utterly reliable now and accurate. Not the best on the market maybe but for the price it's pretty darn good.

1. Marlin 60/795 (Best overall value, inherently accurate and reliable $189)
2. CZ 512 (Obvious CZ quality, plus the above. last I saw one, it was going for $500ish. I might be mistaking. It was 3 years ago)
3. TC R-55 (All of the above. Excellent quality. recently discontinued but some may still be around in NIB condition. Before being discontinued, it was going for around $600)

These are the ones I have owned.

or if you can, find a USED 10/22 with all the bells and whistles and throw a new barrel on it- that's what I did- barrels are cheaper in most cases than full guns

Once again. Go out and handle them. Do you want wood, plastic, press or cut checkering, long, short, heavy or sported contour barrel, if you don t want to scope it maybe you need better open sights, stainless or blue... and on and on... Try one and if after a while, once your needs are more define, well, sell it and get something more suited to your needs. I know you asked for a new or close to new rifle but some older rifles have been well taken care of and might be a good deal.
Good luck.

This. Post a message in the forum here looking for buddies for a bit of field shooting. Let them know you want to try out a couple different types of rifle, and mention you'd be willing to provide the ammo... Good chance you'll get a few takers, and everyone loves to show off and expound on the value of what they have.

Gives you a chance to try out a few different rifles, find out what works for you, and meet a few new people who are into shooting. Nothing but win.

I also have a marlin 795 and its been great for me. The ruger 10/20 is the glock of rifles....very well designed, tons of mods and models, reliable and will take all kinds of abuse without being babied...just not everybody's cup of tea. Its also almost twice the price of most others. A buddy of mine who is a gun smith down south said that the way the 10/20 is designed (something to do with tolerances and head spacing) it cleans itself. The action on most other semis will gunk up after couple of hundred rounds causing ftfs and ftes

Marlin 795 or Remington 597 for semis. The Ruger DOES have a huge aftermarket, it would be better if you're looking for something to modify.
I have a Marlin XT22 bolt that I like, the factory sights leave something to be desired but I wanted to scope it anyhow. I have shot a couple of the Savage bolt actions at a similar price point and they seem to be a hair more accurate. Both have adjustable triggers.

Thanks guys, but this ain't my first rodeo:) I was looking for opinions on .22lr semis, not a how to buy a gun tutorial:) Looks like the 795 and 10/22 are the best liked. Plain Jane is OK for me, so the 795 looks like the right move. I'll simply add a scope, sling, and a couple extra 10 shot mags. Thanks again:)
