Having downrange spotters/target pullers is a standard practice, provided the proper facilities and protocols are observed. Where I do most of my shooting, there are concrete shelters, very much like a military range. Reliable radio communications are essential.
Sometimes you see things that make you wonder. I saw some guys sighting in their hunting rifles. The shooters were standing in the bed of a p/u truck, resting their rifles on the roof of the cab. The target was in front of a large pile of sand/gravel. The spotter was standing off to one side about 15 feet. Laddie would fire a shot, the spotter would walk over and point to the hole. Laddie would observe through the rifle scope. Having already worked the bolt on his rifle, feeding another round into the chamber ready to go. As soon as the spotter stepped back the 15 feet, he would fire another shot. Laddie did keep his finger off the trigger when observing the spotter through his scope, pointing at the hole.
