Basic GSG-5 FAQ:
http://www.germansportguns.de/gsg5/index.pl?mode=2
Q: What is the GSG-5?
A: The GSG-5 is a semi-automatic rifle in .22LR made by German Sport Guns, a German company. It looks like an MP5 but the two share no operational/mechanical similarities but have similar controls/buttons. *Rumor has it that some MP5 parts, stocks and accessories, will fit the GSG-5.
Q: What models do they make?
A: GSG lists three main models, a long barrel model with fake silencer, a short barrel model that looks like your average MP5, and a mini model that is identical to the short barrel model but has a stub for a butt.
Q: Can I buy one:
A: The short answer is no. The long answer is still no. The GSG-5 is classified as prohibited because it was deemed to be an MP5 variant. The RCMP firearms lab has a GSG-5 and they are in the process of re-examining it. The expectation is that it will be approved by spring...ish.
Q: Will it be restricted?
A: NO! At least not based on logic. The long barrel model and short barrel model meet the minimum overall length required. Yes, the short barrel model's barrel is, well, short, but since these are rimfire rifles the only limit on qualification is overall length. Those two models will be non-restricted. The short barrel mini model with no butt would be restricted by virtue of overall length. This is not to say the government does not have the power to make them restricted anyway a la long barrel AR's but this is unlikely.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: They are selling in the US for slightly under $500. Best estimates are somewhere in the $700 range for the domestic market. Keep in mind these are only estimates. Don't like it, then don't buy one or import one stateside if/when they are approved in Canada.
Q: Who is importing it?
A: Blue Line Activities,
http://www.blueline-activities.com/ , The Shooting Edge is keeping a list of names for people that want to be first in line to buy one. Email at
jamesb@theshootingedge.com if you want on the list.

Blue Line:
Hello everyone,
Firstly, let us apologize to all of you, for waiting this long before giving you explanation on current GSG-5 situation on Canadian Market.
German Sports Guns Gmbh introduced the GSG-5 on 2007 Shot Show. RCMP officials visited their boot and asked to disassemble the gun and take a closer look. Unfortunately, they were not able to do so, because displayed gun was non-working model and could not be disassembled. They had to base their original decision on visual similarity with MP5 and classify it as MP-5 variant.
We immediately contacted RCMP FRT division and kindly asked them if they would reconsider their classification decision providing that we could prove that GSG-5 is not a variant of H&K MP5. We offered to send them working model which they could take apart and closely examine. We explained that GSG-5, except for visual similarity, is an entirely different gun. GSG-5 is German Sports Gun Gmbh’s sole design and once disassembled, the distinction is quite obvious; it is completely different design with different operating systems. Furthermore, parts in between those two guns are not interchangeable.
From the very beginning, we had great communication with RCMP FRT division. On several occasions we had pleasure to meet with the head of that department. We got the promise that GSG-5 will be closely looked at and classification re-evaluated based on findings.
GSG-5 design was finalized in September ’07. First run model was sent to RCMP, for examination month later, in late November.
Blue Line Activities Ltd is German Sport Guns Gmgh, Canadian agent from the start. Providing that everything goes as we all hope, large shipment will leave Germany as soon as reclassification is done. Warranty service and West Coast coverage will be done through Dlask Arms, and one of the major distributors is going to be The Shooting Edge.
We trust that RCMP’s FRT division is going to recognize the differences and reclassify GSG-5 from prohibited into non restricted and restricted categories.
We are looking forward to becoming one of Canadian Gun Nutz sponsoring dealers and presenting you new products in days to come
Best Regards,
Blue Line Activities Ltd.
