.22 revolver opinions

I love my H&R Side-Kick, but I do want a Top Break as well.

Interesting gun K. What's the deallie-o beneath the hammer spur?

Hi all,

I am considering picking up a .22 revolver. I admit to being partial to the top break design, but I don't really have a good reason for this other than that I like the idea of it. I am looking for opinions from those who have more experience with such things.

Thanks
Karl

only top break ive really seen is the H&R and the webley .22 trainer (of which ive been dying to find!) model 17 is the best bet for quality but the prices are getting staggering!

I have a Stainless Taurus Tracker 22/22 mag that is excellent value for $ . accurate ,shoots every thing I have stuck in it (including shorts , not really supposed to ) scope base is available for it as well .

The little Ruger 4.2" SP-01 is a great little shooter. Certainly as accurate in my hands as my old 17 I had. The eight shots keep you shooting longer and you can buy speedloaders for it. Use Google to get the supplier.

Take Care

Bob

+1 for the S&W Model 17 or similar.

I did have an H&R 929 9 shot top break .22 back in the day. Brutal double action but was actually not to bad on single action.

Apples & oranges comparison to the venerable Model 17, though [which I have also owned & regretted selling].

I have the Ruger SP101 .22 and an older S&W M17. Thought after I shot them a while I would sell my least favourtite of the two. I really like them both and do not plan on parting with either anytime soon.

I have an older production Ruger SP101

A Colt Diamondback, ;)to keep my Python 'company'

And, just to round out the .22 revolver selection a little, I have an early production Ruger single six, with the flat loading gate.

I was thinking of thinning things out a little:redface: but that probably won't happen any time soon.

Hmmm .... here is a vid of someone who is having jamming problems with his S&W 617. Have any of you had any similar problems?

If you mean cylinder jamming it happens when cheap thin wall ammo is used it expands and walks out jamming the cylinder...

It happened frequently to me with my 617 when new.. I switched to CCI ammo and no problems..

X2 on that: I use good quality ammo in my 617 and have no problems

Yeah, the cylinder is jamming, which also prevents the hammer from cocking in either single or double action. It did so both with Remington Golden Bullets, and CCI mini mags.

Hu? I use Federal Bulk in my 617 and never had any issues. Find my 17 gunks up faster than the 617 for some reason.

Love the vintage .22 ammo boxes!

Any damage depends on if S&W uses a controlled travel firing pin or not. These days I suspect that controlled travel is far more common. Still, it's not something I'd do unless it says it's OK in the manual.

Found this on the S&W FAQ page.

Can I dry fire my S&W handgun?

Q: Can I dry fire my Smith & Wesson?

A: Yes, except for the .22 caliber pistols which includes models 22A, 22S, 422, 2206, 2214, 2213 and 41.

.22 caliber revolvers such as models 17, 43, 63, 317 and 617 also should not be dry fired.

Q: Why can't I dry fire my .22 pistol or revolver?

A: Dry firing a S&W .22 pistol or revolver will cause damage to the firing pin.
