It's important to understand that if you compare the variety of .22 short out there...to what you can get in .22lr, there really IS no sensible reason to pick .22 short other than MAYBE squeezing a few extra rounds into the tube mag of a gun that happens to like them.
I wasn't aware they'd gunk up so much. Although cleaning isn't a real issue.

-hunting near homes
-spook less game when shooting grouse/rabbit on big game hunts
-personal choice/something different
I use CB long's for that now,and their a LOT quieter then short's.
