22 Shorts form a LR bolt action...

So just a thought I had today... and I'm expecting to catch at least a little crap for asking this but here it is...

I have a savage MKII bolt action... basic model with irons, can I chamber and fire one 22 short (or CB short) at a time?
 
the only downside is they tend to gunk up the chamber a bit,if you poof off a lot of em,you might have a bit of trouble when reverting back to long rifle.
 
From a tubular magazine, often they feed fine...

Yep that and lead shavings etc to make chamber ing the longer case potentially problematic.... so you clean it, world goes round
 
Make sure before you switch back to LR that you take a good stiff brass brush to the chamber to clean it out properly, then you are good to go. Many years ago I used to shoot .22 cal pellets using .22 starter pistol blanks out of my Lakefield Mossberg, in my back yard.

For year's I used short's in my Cooey 60. In that tubular mag it held a LOT of them.rarely had to refill during a say's hunt.
 
Thanks for all the input. I have just never tried them before and I seen some at my local CT so was just wondering what they'd be like.
I might give them.a try but I probably won't be shooting a lot of them. I wasn't aware they'd gunk up so much. Although cleaning isn't a real issue.
 
I see this question asked frequently enough that I'm starting to wonder if there is some huge stockpile of 22 short sitting out there that I'm not aware of! :) Fair enough question TargetGuy and in my experience, the answers you got here are spot-on. It's important to understand that if you compare the variety of .22 short out there...to what you can get in .22lr, there really IS no sensible reason to pick .22 short other than MAYBE squeezing a few extra rounds into the tube mag of a gun that happens to like them. I bought a box to run through my lever action about 10 years ago, and didn't even bother after a couple of re-loads. More than half a box still sitting in my cabinet at home a decade+ later.

i'm wondering if people saying this are speaking of older rounds? i bought a box of 100 CCI shorts last year and have put over 3/4 of the box through my very fussy brno 581 semi without cleaning the gun. i was out last week and sent 100 rounds of 22LR down the tube without a single issue...
 
i loved shorts in my cooey model 60 it does hold alot of them and they work well enough on squirrel and even rabbit if i got the chance to shoot one

i dont shoot much of them anymore i have one box of IVI .22 shorts left(the clear plastic box made not too long ago) but when i get my hands on some win or rem i shoot them

it will lead up the chamber if you shoot alot but a cleaning brush will take care of that
 
I personally have a love for 22 shorts, grew up with them. I use them to this day a lot for small game and pest control. For quiet pest dispatching I use CB Longs, SUPER quiet from a full length barrel and still drop squirrels and groundhogs/woodchucks dead on the spot.
