Hey guys~considering adding one of these to my collection, even though I'm not sure what it'll give me that me .17 HMR won't. I'd like to try it on our big Ontario ground hogs too. :)

So, I don't want to make this a ".17 vs. .22 mag" debate...just want to hear what you like about the mag. Wouldn't mind knowing what rifle(s) you have chambered in .22 WMR, and what you'd recommend for a budget-minded shooter. I've always been a little interested in H&R single-shots, so speak-up if you have one in .22 WMR. Would rather test the water on one of those in rimfire before I consider one in .223.

Thanks!

My best friend/hunting partner used his H&R 22 mag religiously. We hunt crows and groundhogs and 'yotes together alot. It was a great shooter but uncomfortably small for me.

He sold it for a stainless Marlin that holds 12 rounds in a tube magazine (very nice rifle), I dont get a shot off at his misses any more. When you look at the huge variety of bolt actions avaliable under $300 it seems logical to go with the repeater. A new stevens 305can be had for $220!

I have a Savage 93F and like it a lot. It shoots 1" groups at 100 yards with Winchester 40g HP's. I would get the Savage any day over the H&R. I got a H&R in .22 RF for my Grandson and it shot so bad I got rid of it right away. If it had not been mail order I would have taken it back and stuffed it some place.

Gagnon's in Oshawa has Zastava 22 mags for under $300 . They are supposed to be the same action as the Remington Model #5. If you pick them up they feel similar to a center fire rifle for weight and fit.
Just a thought.

I've got a stainless canoe paddle Ruger 77/22mag and love it. Feels and operates like my full sized Ruger M77 hunting rifles.

From top to bottom; 338win, 7.62x39, 22mag, and 308win.

I can't figure out why they make them. It really offers very little over the .22LR, and the ammo selection is terrible. If I wanted more than a .22LR I would get a centerfire and reload it.

I just got a Savage 93BTVSS in .22 WMR and so far I am loving it. A little more expensive to shoot over a LR but cheaper then my Marlin .17 and a billion times more accurate then my Remington 597. Once I get it dialed in right I'm ceratin it will shoot quarter size groups or less at 100 yards.

1:at a hundred yards the bullet is as fast as the 22lr at the muzzle.2:its point blank range is something like 125 yards.nice collection head damage:cool:all you are missing is the 7mm mag:D

you must be using your 597 wrong.

There is a difference on the power from a 22rimfiree to the 22mag and that is why I have one. I do some beaver shooting in the spring and with a 22 mag hit the beaver is done compared to the 22 rim. After a while the beaver starts to come around again with the 22rim, with the same shot location from both. And the further range with the 22mag helps also. Mine is a ruger semi, but there would be no harm in a good marlin in a 22 mag.
