.22 WMR fans~what do you love about this caliber?

I have the .22 mag in Marlin 783 (tube), 782 (magazine)(2- 782 rifles-one scoped), Marlin 1894 lever(2 rifles-one scoped) and Win. 9422 (2 rifles-one scoped). I like using both iron sights and scopes. Great round. I've never gone the .17 route.

I finally found my last and final 22 magnum! A Walther KKJ-MA sporter made in 1965, with tangent sights, it will make the final part of my rimfire collection complete! It is accurate, and comes close to my beloved 22 hornet, and I can shoot rabbits in the winter at some good ranges!
The 22 magnum is also a great camp gun when I go fishing in the summer, its not a centre fire, wich legally cannot be used that time of year, it fills this small nich for my use, plus I love the sound and extra little kick! Dale Z!

Fantastic responses guys, thanks so much! Definitely has me re-thinking the H&R, but I was hoping to avoid any heat on the home front for buying another rifle this year. An H&R could have flown under the radar...if you know what I mean. :)

Been reading more on the options since I posted this thread, and am no curious about the Marlin XT-22MR. Anyone know if these rifles are for sale yet?

Don't completely discount the idea of an H&R. If you like the idea of a single shot, you can try one out cheaply, and most of them shoot very well. I had one in .17HMR that was a tackdriver, and still have one in .17HM2. Out of about a dozen over the years, in various chamberings, I had only one that was a real dog, in .44mag. The rest were all great. I still have a couple in .45-70, excellent shooters and excellent value for the money.

The .22mag is my go-to rifle for feral cats or fox. The 32gr Remington Premiums are perfect for this, much better than any .17 caliber. I've had several, and finally settled on a Ruger 77/22mag, stainless HB with lam stock. I doubt I'll ever buy another one, but I wouldn't be without one in my safe.

I can't figure out....

A first!:D

Thanks for the thoughtful response, I'll continue to give the H&R some consideration while I wait for my local dealer to get one in. I don't like the idea of "starter"...or cheap guns, generally prefer to save for the one I want even if that takes longer. If I end-up liking the .22WMR, I know I'll get serious about the rifle and optics but for now...I'd kind of like to try it w/o dropping almost $1G....like I did for my .17 HMR set-up. :)

Lebarons is going to get them soon. Price on their site is $202.

I can't figure out why they make them. It really offers very little over the .22LR, and the ammo selection is terrible. If I wanted more than a .22LR I would get a centerfire and reload it.

For a longest time I felt the same about 22WMR. But then, purely by chance, I ended up owning one rifle (597) and instantly liked it. Can't load any centerfire down enough to make it as sweet as 22WMR. Well, Hornet maybe but thats it. Of course one can make incredibly accurate reloads, weighing bullets and sizing brass and such. But then, every hour at the range will be coming with couple hours of reloading. I myself can't be bothered, 10$ for a box of 50 and you have a lazer beam to 120 yards. I say its s must-have chambering.

Thanks for the input 22lr, much appreciated. Update on the H&R~finally got one in my hands today...and I got cold feet. Not because of the caliber, but because of the rifle itself. Left me a little cold. It was an H&R sportser, so it came equipped with iron sights, drilled for a scope mount but none included. I knew it didn't, but thought if the sights are decent enough...I could make due for the first while. Not so.

Didn't think much of the cheap (rear the worst) sights, and you couldn't even see them if the hammer wasn't cocked. All that~kind of as expected, but I supppose it's still good value at $149 new. Not for me...at least not today.

So, now I'm extra keen on seeing that new Marlin XT-22 in 22 mag. I know I could always get an econo Savage...I like them anyway. We'll see. I like the idea of a bolt more, and also like the option of a quick follow-up shot. (or 4) Thanks for all the input guys.

I have an old mossberg chuckster 22mag. Put it side by side to a 17hmr on a windy day shoot 50-100-150-and 200 yards. See what hits the target and what tiny bullet hits dirt 5-6' downwind. That's why I don't have a 17

I have 22lr bolt single shot, 22lr bolt 10 shot magazine, 22 mag in Marlin 25n bolt rifle with a simple scope with see thru mounts and 22lr auto with banana magazine. 22lr and 17 hmr in levers There all fun, there all great. I like the mag simply for the harder smack. I live on a farm so I was ( layed up with a bad broken leg and high on drugs so I hope this makes sense) reaching into the gun cabinet quiet frequently (skunks coyotes)

Does anyone make a .22 mag similiar to the looks of the Marlin XT-22MVSR for around $300. Basically I'm looking for a synthetic stock, heavy barrel, no sights and magazine fed all for around $300. And if so who sells them in Canada?
Here's a pic for reference

I recently bought a Marlin 981T(.22lr) and really enjoying it because of the tube capacity(17rnds/.22lr). Marlin also sells the 22WMR version (~$250).
I handled a Zastava Z5 22WMR yesterday and was quite impressed with the whole package. It felt "full-sized", with a nice woodstock, good irons, and the action felt solid and "beefy". At under $300, I almost took it home!
I have to give it some thought because I already have the 981T and a .223 SPS Tactical so I'll need to figure out how the 22WMR will fit in.
