.22 WMR fans~what do you love about this caliber?

Hey guys~considering adding one of these to my collection, even though I'm not sure what it'll give me that me .17 HMR won't. I'd like to try it on our big Ontario ground hogs too. :)

So, I don't want to make this a ".17 vs. .22 mag" debate...just want to hear what you like about the mag. Wouldn't mind knowing what rifle(s) you have chambered in .22 WMR, and what you'd recommend for a budget-minded shooter. I've always been a little interested in H&R single-shots, so speak-up if you have one in .22 WMR. Would rather test the water on one of those in rimfire before I consider one in .223.

Thanks!

I like the extra weight of bullet, up to 50 grains. I like the Ruger 77/22 I have it chambered in. And since we live here in the snowy north country I find I can handle individual cartridges better than the smaller LR cartridges. I also understand that the .22WMR is somewhat more water resistant than a 22LR. Again with melty snow, good if true. And hunting I don't have to shoot finishing shots of wounded gophers, the mags drop them totally or miss them.

Zerex . I just bought a Savage 93FV in 22WMR , no sights , blued heavy barrel , accutrigger , synthetic stock , mag fed.... for $301.26 taxs incl from Ellwoods they didnt have the stainless version 93FVSS in stock ...it sells there for around $360 plus tax.
I will pick it up this Thursday as I am driving right by there anyhow :dancingbanana::dancingbanana:
I was debating getting the 22WMR or one in 17HMR and I decided on the 22WMR due to the increased hitting power over the 17HMR. And becuase I already have a H&R model 650 revolver in 22cal / 22WMR
I really wanted the Savage 93R17 TR but they dont make it in 22WMR and we dont have gophers out here to shoot only groundhogs ..;)

I can't figure out why they make them. It really offers very little over the .22LR, and the ammo selection is terrible. If I wanted more than a .22LR I would get a centerfire and reload it.

When I was a kid out shooting groundhogs,I used a 22cal. Then I bought my first 22MAG. Now I can't understand why they still make a 22LR. There's no comparing the two when it comes to shooting hogs. I have'nt went back to the LR since. The only advantage in using a LR is cost of ammo.

Basically if you want to kill something use the .22 mag. If you just want to screw around shooting pop cans stick to the .22 lr. Honestly though the difference is night and day regardless of what some people say the .22 lr WILL NOT kill everything in north america with one shot.. i've shot dozens of sick cows about an inch and a half above the eyes... when i take the .22 magnum one bullet does the job... If i just happen to have the .22 lr i better have about 25 bullets with me cause thats what it will take...

Buy a marlin though if your going to get a .22 magnum. Ive got an old marlin 25mn .22 mag and simply put i'd trust my life to it.

Oh one more thing out of maybe 2000 shots with the .22 mag i've never had a dud. Bet you can't say that for the .22 lr.
