220 Swift Vs 22-250

well there it is, I'm looking at buying a dedicated small gun for yotes.

I'm currently using my 25-06 for all small critters, deer and smaller but I need another rifle.

I'll be reloading so thats not a problem.

Swift is a little flatter shooting therefore a little of that margin of error in range estimation can be removed. Not much though;).
Just came from the range and it's quite a good breeze blowing so I got a reminder of just how much wind can effect those .22's;) out there at the 300yrd+
 
22-250 AI with a nice 1 in 8 twist :D

Or I might take a good long look at a benchrest style 22 PPC, 22 BR, or 222.

And why are we limited to 22's anyway? 17's and 204's are kinder to fur and more pleasant to shoot. And the various 6mm's are king of the long-range varminters
 
I have owned a lot of Varmint rifles and there is nothing quite like the Swift in a factory offering in 22 cal. 50 grainers can be driven safely to 4000+ in a 26" tube, and a decent Swift will shoot into ½moa very easily. (22-250 is capable of similar accuracy, but lags a bit in velocity) The Swift is NOT hard to load for as some suggest, and it has the added "cool" factor of being the original hotshot. What a Swift does to a gopher has to be seen to be believed. I once killed 5 of them with one shot. They were all standing in a group, I shot the middle one, and secondary projectiles killed the rest! A solid hit on a crow, and nothing but the wings hit the ground....pure rapture, the swift! One disadvantage to the Swift is brass life. Those long, sloping cases
(by comparison to the .22-250) in combination with hot loads mean short life expectancy on your brass.

Rifle selection is another nod in favor of the '250.

I've owned both, like them both very much. If I had to choose just one, it'd be the .223 WSSM;-)
 
Ive owned both and would take the Swift any day, its pretty much a lazor beam. 22-250 is super round as well and is chambered in way more rifles so it does have its upsides.

If you're talking velocity, then not so much--the .220 Swift and .223 WSSM beat it like a rented mule. But taken as a package, yeah it's about perfect.

Though I'm curious, how many guys using .223 Rem really miss the velocity? I keep eyeing those cute n' efficient lil' cases, thinking how many loads I could get out of a can of Varget...
 
I love my Rem 700 VS SF 220 Swift all dolled up with a Timney trigger and Tubb firing pin and spring. It wears VXII headgear 6-18x40 A/O LRV and does a wicked job with 55 BT's out past 350 on dirt pigs. Actually almost makes it boaring....point ...shoot...dead pig. I do want to mess around with the load for COL a little more but right now she prints inside 1/2 MOA
 
Sure is, but you're well into an area of diminishing returns. You add a LOT more powder for modest velocity gains. Then, of course, you could go for a 22-243 Middlestead or 22 Cheetah, and the 22-284.
