.222 vs .223

Those of you with the savage 340, I am working on a 340b in 22 for the brother in-law. Have any of you scope them and did you have to inlet the stock to get the side mount to fit.

It' will be rigged mostly as a coyote gun so I am looking for bullet for reloading sugestions. I was initially thinking 50gr Nosler BT.
 
Between the two, I like the 222 better, but would probably buy a new 223 over it, mostly because .223 brass is much easier and cheaper to come by. Hell, go to your local range with a broom sometime. I like handloading, but I hate policing my brass when shooting. The 223 gets you the best of both - you can handload, and not worry about policing your brass if you don't want to.

Yes you will have to remove some wood. The largest objective that will work with the Weaver setup is 40mm, if it's an AO you may have some clearance issues.
 
When I mounted the scope on mine I never had to do anything to the stock to make it work for me.
I used a Weaver #1 side mount, base #48401,and I think I used the #49340 Rings and Bracket.That is the long bracket. The short one is 49350.

I picked up a 340C drom 330Dakota on here awhile back. Awesome gun. My thought at the time as it would be great "stepping stone" between a .22 and a .243 for my 9 year old son. No kick, but it is quite loud.

What a fun gun to shoot. I've loaded up 50g VMAX bullets and some of the Barnes XLC 53g. My son loves the gun and even though the gun is still a bit long for him, he groups extremely well with it. You should have some fun with your grandkids and this gun.

I had to remove some material from the Scope mount to fit a 6.5x20 scope on it.

Great gun! the 340 is a bit ugly, well alot ugly, but she shoots like a hot damn.

Mine likes BLC2 and 45gr Sierra Hornets....or Hornady 50gr with IMR4198.
 
comments please the reason i ask..i have a 222 but i dont hear much of it..but a ton of stuff to be found on the 223..
or should i own one of each?

Definately get one of each, THEN get a Ruger .204!
 
Most accurate rifle I ever owned was a BSA HB in .222
Would shoot .3" all day long and such a sweet round to load for. Brass lasts forever! Very low pressure (around 45,000 CUP I think)

Doug....no you did not send any recipies.....but i hope you do soon.as i prepped a bunch of brass,just last night:) i will finish it off tonight probly..i got a h4198 powder to start off..
i will be using the bullets i got off of you...i believe they about 40 grain v-max,im thinking of 20gr of the powder...
these will be used mostly for the kids to get use to the feel of the gun..
they asking for a scope on it..
i said not till you learn to use some iron sight,s..
as all other plinkers they use have a scope..
 
Have shot a Sako .222 heavy barrel varmint for almost 20 years. Shot gazillions of gophers, crows, fox, coyote and the like. Just love that wide beavertail forend. Re-barreled her last year with a 22 inch 1:12 twist #5 profile Gailard stainless barrel. The old factory barrel went over 10,000 rounds before it started to get frosty at the front end and open up a wee bit.

My pet load is a 50 gr. Sierra Blitz pushed by 20.5 gr. of IMR 4198 in an RP case. I'm sure this load will shoot sub moa in almost any gun as well.

My accuracy load, in a number of rifles, with a variety of bullet and brass types, is any 55 grain bullet with 22.5 grains of H3031 powder. It does not seem to matter what kind of brass I use, what kind of primer I use, or what make and model of 55 grain bullet I use. You might say it is a very "forgiving" loading.

sorry Don, I have no spare 55 gr bullets. But H3031 powder is wonderful stuff, I use it in many cartridges. It is an official "OLD FART" powder as it has been around for a while and can be used in lots of boring old (accurate) applications............

I generally buy it from Higginsons in their four (five???) pound boxes.
