.222rem - H322 or H4198?

A 250 yard shot at a sitting Jack can be blown 7 inches off target in a moderate wind with my Priv .222 50gr factory ammo, with a 55gr Gameking handload in my .22-250 it will only drift 3 inches max....that is a huge difference. The low BC bullet and the lower velocity really factor in.

Not much time for a range finder, they don't sit still long enough - they get very nervous, flip bi-pod and go prone before they bolt...
 
Both h322 and imr 4198 work good in my 222 with 50gr Hornady 50grsx. Tried some 36 gr varmint grenades last summer on gophers but was not impressed with accuracy or performance.
 
My most accurate jacketed load in my .222 was with 50 gr. ballistic tip Nozzzlers and H-322 powder, the Prvi's weren't good, but i don't know how you can select the most accurate bullet out of a catalogue. You have to try lots of diff. bullets and powders and select the most accurate, there not much room for error or a poorly grouping rifle on a standing gopher at 200 yds or more.
 
222 loads

I have 4 rifles in 222 and have a couple of loads that work very well in them. With 322 powder two loads with 50gr Speer TNT, 22.8gr and 23.1 and a doozy of a load with 40gr Vmax and Reloder 7, 20.7 gr.
These loads are done at factory length. Primers for the 50gr load are the 450 CCI mag and same with the 40gr. FS
 
I recently started loading for my old Winchester 70 in .222 and have found one heck of an accurate load using a 55g Hornady JSP and a good dose of IMR-4895. It was the second load I tried and I stopped there the accuracy was that good.

I tried some of these this weekend and could not get a good group with them. I was using H4895 and Varget starting from min load to max according to the Lee manual. I was only shooting at 50 yards and was getting around 2-3 groups:confused: I have a Rem 722 in .222rem that would shoot the tacks off the page at 100 yrds with 50 gr soft points. This is the first time I reloaded for this gun, but not the first time reloading. Do you guys think its the bullet I'm using? I even swapped the scope to confirm that it was not buggered. I guess I will have to try some other bullets/powder.

I also have a 722 in 222 and it would not shoot the 50gr Vmax either. I tried 4198, BLC2, H322 and 3031, no go. It shoots the 50gr SX and Blitz with any of these powders.
 
i have a savage 340B in 222 rem.just run some test loads yesterday with 50 grain v-max bullets over IMR4895.i was getting on average 1.5-2 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards.some of these groups i posted pics of in another thread.some of these groups had 3-4 shots at or under 1 inch.the best seemed to be 22.8 and 23.0 grain loads.going to try some magnum primers in the next batch with same loads.as well as some loads up and down by .1 grains with same primers i used in first loads.
 
Time when the deuce was top dog in benchrest shooting H 4198 (dirty powder) but it was one of choice, RL 7 & Win 748 where top shooters as well, bullets 52 & 53 flat base bullets
There is one powder no one has mentioned is VT 133 and it works really good, nowdays the 6br & 6mmppc seems all top shooters use VT133
Hunting my 222HV rem 700 will shoot just over the inch at 300 yards with little or no wind, and I had no coffee with 55gr Nosler Ballistic tips with Rl 15 my 233 with 55gr Noslers and Varget hunting loads at 3420 fps pretty wicket on groundhogs
 
After a spring of load testing I have found that 23 grs of benchmark and a 50 gr SPSX will produce half inch groups in my 40 year old ADL, it shot well with H322 & 4198, but benchmark shrank the groups considerably

My Tikka T3 Hunter in .222 liked WIN748 with 55gr VMAX. It would shoot 5 shot groups .75" or a little less at 100yds with consistancy. I would have to look up the load, but it was around 25gr. WIN748 meters way better than 4198 as well.
 
I still have a 788 Rem which I haven't had out in years. When I did shoot it a lot I tried R7, H332 IMR4198 and 748. Settled on 748 and put more than a couple lbs through the old girl. My brother who shoots bench rest competitively with a 6mmPPC also loads for a 700V with a tight chambered custom barrel. He has settled on 748 as well in this very accurate 222.
