223 ammo suggestions

I've recently aquired a Remington varmint synthetic fluted 223 (1-12 twist, 26" barrel) and would like some opinions on what to use for a factory load. My plan was to buy 5-7 boxes from the same lot to get the brass and then reload those.

At any rate I'm thinking of getting the Hornady V-Max 40gr rounds as I've read heavier lead is for less twist. Would this be a good round and bullet weight to start out with for general target practice and gophers?

I havn't figured out what kind of distance I'm going for though. I havn't picked it up yet but my plan is to get a Bushnell 6500 Elite 2.5-16x42 tactical scope for it.
 
That's probably a good choice, there's always a little guesswork involves, as results will vary somewhat for each individual gun. The lighter factory ammo, like 45gr Winchester varmint, shoots very well in my 1:12 twist Ruger.

What would a heavier weight like 55gr do (besides the obvious) with a 1-12 twist barrel? More/less accurate than a lighter weight?
 
I think you would have to try it, if you are talking about a particular factory load. There's a range of bullet weights that will stabilize and shoot accurately in a given twist rate barrel. I do know from experience that 69 gr bullets do not stabilize well and shoot accurately at 200 yards in mine. Where the cut off is, I'd would have to experiment to find out. I'm happy with 45gr factory ammo in mine.
 
I would just buy whatever is least expensive for factory ammo.

1:12 rifling is just fine for 55 grain bullets; this is how the M16A1 was rifled for M193 ammo. The only way to determine what bullets your rifle likes is to test them.
