.223 for everything, the gunnutz version

your always going to have one that gets killed for the 9 that run off, I say that for the reason I shot a 3 point blacktail years ago that had 2 .22cal center fire bullets in the upper thigh that did not penetrate enough to break bone so I personally know under hunting conditions a .223 is way under powered for me except if you have a perfect situation which is not that often IMO. ENJOY
Don’t know that I’ve ever seen a deer stand around long enough to get shot two times in the ass. Especially when it wasn’t enough to make him sick, just hurt a bunch….. Doesn’t really seem to add up…

Anyway, here’s another bull moose with a 223AI. By your math that means I found 20 bull moose to shoot with 18 lost. In a 2 day season. Thats a moose every two hours in our day light October hours. I’m good, but not quite THAT good.

Seems like the point is lost on most of those who object that we are talking about some very specific bullets fired from 223 Rem and above.

Going by the logic here, I think 308s a garbage big game round cause a 100gr Speer Plinker and 110gr Vmax can't reach the vitals with an ass shot, so everyone using 308 Win must wound 99 animals, recover 1, and just not talk about the losses. They're all just that dishonest.

I mean sure, they have LOTS of pics of the successes, but I am sure, through no firsthand knowledge at all, that they're just all deceptive and not talking about the numerous woundings.

well when the first shot does not drop the animal you keep shooting so i don't know why it does not add up unless you have not had that situation come up. and a .22 centerfire does not have near the energy to make them sick as fast as a 308, 270 ect.

Energy is completely meaningless unless bullet construction is taken into account.

Bullet weight, construction, and the behavior as it passes through an animal at sufficient speed ensure it is a killer. And these ones have demonstrated they can pass through a good amount of animal and still disrupt the vitals enough for quick, efficient kills.

Conjecture to the contrary is merely that. Conjecture.

Anyone can use whatever they like, and thats great. Use a 458 Win mag if you want to and more power to you. But to call the .223 and the bullets referenced here "inadequate" is simply wrong, and thats been proven time and time again. Conspiracy theories of missing wounded animals notwithstanding lol

Perhaps "Hey if you suck at this, maybe try a bigger rifle that might make up for how much you suck" is a valid point. I dunno. TBH that person shouldn't be out there in the first place. I know he is, but we don't tailor ALL of our conversation around him, do we?

There is a new thread on R0Kslide about hunting deer with the 22 hornet...
Cool. The guys that are for it certainly know it's limitations at work within them.

The guys against probably spew nonsense like 308 for everything"
Or, my friend's uncle heard that a guy shot one with a hornet in the azz with an fmj at 500 yards and it didn't kill it so now you need a 270 at least or shut up"

Haven't read that thread wouldn't know.
I HAVE read the thread referenced several times in this thread. HAVE YOU?

According to the old folks in my family, 270 sucks annd wounds moose, you need better hahaha. They don't wanna hear different either.

Some of our foum members hae cleanly killed deer with smaller 22 cals like the Hornet or the more powerful 221 Fireball. Its fine for the job if used within its limits, like Cam said.

What's the best bullet for a 9 twist 223?
While I haven’t personally used the 73 ELD m, I have used the 75 Amax a whole bunch from a 1:9 Montana 223AI before it got turned into a 1;7 223AI. (Still have a few thousand of the 75’s to use up.)

Shot this one with a 75 Amax at about 12 yards still hunting/trailing him through a patch of timber - he stood up from behind a bush when I hit the grunt call. Shot him square in the chest and he made one big wheeling jump and collapsed when his feet hit the ground. No exit, but I wasn’t interested in digging around in his stomach to look for the bullet.

I didn’t kill this one personally, but it was my 223AI loaded with my 75 Amax, rested over my hiking poles.
402 yards quartering to us, onside shoulder crushed, top of the heart chewed up, and an exit at the back of the rib cage. Two big bounces and dead, and slid for about 40 yards down the hill.

Doesn’t look like it works very well at all.
