I stopped keeping track 10 or 15 years ago, but into triple digits....as well as black bear, grizzly, elk, moose, sheep, cats, coyotes, wolves, etc, etc.
Your point?

I just stating a fact that Evan though a 223 will work it's a poor Choice and any one who hunt fore any time shod know that !
So I haven't said a 223 won't work it does and I have dun it but it still a poor choice

Care to back up your opinion with facts? Maybe talk a little about the rifle, twist rate, and bullet(s) used?

I personally would not use a .223 or a shotgun on deer or bigger game. Why the hell would I when there are so many other appropriate calibers? Just to say I did? As somebody said above; why use a finishing hammer to drive a framing stud? As well, I still dont understand why anyone would hunt big game with a shotgun. Are they that bad of a shot they need to knock it over with a bowling ball? Furthermore, with a shotgun, there goes a quarter of the animal that could have been eaten. I will not argue that a well placed .223 rnd wont knock a deer or elk down. It is just that there are numerous other suitable calibers that will do the job efficiently and humanely.

This is just my opinion. And only that. Call me FNG. I got broad shoulders, for a scronny redneck.

What does one say to the US military personnel who oft complain about the lack of stopping power from their M4's ? Bullet type, must be right?

HAAHaa wen I was growing up we wear poor and had to hunt with what ever we had and had no options I still hunt with anything that is handy
Hell the most important thing was what ammo we had at the time if it was 22lr that was what we hunted with if it was 30-30 we would hut with that
As I said I will hunt and shoot anything
As for how much I have killed in a life time I have no way of knowing in status Indian and a trapper so no tags and as a trapper how can I give you accurate Numbers

At the time I had to use a shotgun I was waiting for cataract surgery and a sxs Loaded with slugs was the only thing that would work for me and I agree a shotgun is a Poor choice too

I'm glad I had my surgery now I can use Iron sights again for me that's a big deal

If you can't fathom the difference between a FMG approved under the Geneva Convention for civilized hostilities, and a hunting bullet designed for penetration and expansion.....Well then, I guess you better hedge some bets and Magnum up....

It must work because Hollywood never lies...............

Me, I leave mine at home and just go with the 30-06 or 45-70.

You're just all revved up in fight mode, said I was being a sh*thead, lol.
223 is designed to rapidly expend it's energy, would like likely drop a deer even with an FMJ. As long as distance is respected, it'll do the job.
Can't be worse than guys trying for elk at 800 yards and BS like that. Likely better when you remove the flinch combined with long distance shooting. I'd rather a guy shooting deer with a 223 at 100 yards than a 338 Lapua at 800.
Neither is quite my forte, but MEH

Ever give a 8 year old a 10/22 it's scary as hell so much easier teaching them with a good old singl shoot 22 or or a Bolt action
I don't evan like giving them a lever or pump action till do you have some time behind the trigger

Don't get me wrong I have sum rifles I hunt with just because I like shooting them like my m14 and my SKS nothing wrong with hunting with what you like but it is not going to be the rifle I hunt with wen I need food in the freezer I go grad a bolt action in a 30-06 just for the simple Fact I want a rifle I can use on every thing deer, moose, elk, bear ,goat, sheep and don't want to get caught under gun if a opportunity arises

The halibut I am just showing off lol the deer carcass Hanging from the mas is a sitka deer Shot with a 223 at about 20 yards
The 223 was the only rifle on the boat so that was what I used
y

That looks like a lot of wasted meat... you must have had the "right" bullet as I believe that "carcass" is a sign if over penetration and rapid expansion... next time remember to shoot between blinks so you don't waste any meat.

No wast we hung it and cut meat off the bone as we needed it then made a big soup Out of the bones
love deer soup
I shod have got a pic be fore we started eating it HAAHAA
no clue what Brad the ammo or grain of the ammo was but it did have a little green plastic tip lol
I snood mention I would have taken that same shot nomater what the caliber was just happened it was a 223 and the is no such thing as over penetration on a head shot Magnum or small bore don't matter Dead is dead

Have any of you nay sayers looked at the thread on "Black & Green Rifles" with posted pics of game taken with .223's? I don't see carcasses riddled with multiple hits.

I see the guys with their magnoons flinching after a few rds and I've seen their targets in 20 rd "Hunting Rifle" matches out to 300 yds. I really like the "I shoot all my game at 450 yds or so." stories these guys tell with a straight face.

Why don't we let everyone dance with the girl they brought to the ball and have a good time.

Used it on black bear and it kills quick. My opinion on a .223 for deer is simple- Use a TSX or other premium bullet, keep the distance reasonable and put the bullet in the right place. If you do these things the deer will die and you will eat venison yum! :)
