223 load

I do 5 or 10 at least of each and shoot a few groups once I get into an area of a good load. A few groups of 5 are better then 2 groups of 3. For big game rifles I do groups of 3 or 4.

I was looking at what all dies they had around here and found these.

What would a person use these 223 precision dies for?

Where did you find those? Are those RCBS? Do they attach to the top of regular dies?

The bench I made last week. I need to find something for a rear rest. I didnt find my new shooting bench all that comfortable, need to do some kind of adjustments to her.

Heres my crappy groupings. The best was just under a inch.

Also took the wife with me out shooting today. The last time she ever shot anything was a 22 about 25 years ago. I thought she did really good. And... she loved shooting today. She thought it was a fricken blast. w:h:

Well yesterday was a fail for me. I figured I'd test out some .223 accuracy loads but the only .223 rifle I own is an AR. After 45mins making up a batch of .223 rounds with some Benchmark, I noticed that the finished rounds looked odd. I did some surf'n and found out that Hornady AMAX COAL is 2.39" and not 2.25" for AR magazine loading. DUH! Good thing I found that out and not out on the range. Wonder what would have happened?

I can't seem to find the Hornady reloading manual in stock in the GTA. That would have saved me the aggravation of having to pull and reseat bullets. Guess I'll be handfeeding these rounds until I get the right pills for AR loads. :p

Nice bench, its cool that you have your own place to shoot!

thanks

It works but it needs some tweaking for sure. I need a little bit bigger rest for my elbow. I found if I tried to relax for a little while that arm would start to fall asleep because it was kind of handing off the edge and I think I was cutting off its blood supply. heh

I dont have the hornady manual but I got pictures of 40, 50, 53 and 55gr for 223 from the manual. Do you need any of them?

Also Im looking for a pilots for a forster case trimmer, if anyone knows of a good place to pick some up that would be nice.

Well after a few trial an errors (more on that later) and with all the stars, moon and sun all aligned I got my best grouping to date. I just think theres was more luck then anything. :)

Im really happy with this grouping. I know that its only three rounds, but its a good start. And the wifey was there for a witness. :p The wife comes with me every weekend now because I got her hooked on shooting paper with the 17hmr. lol So today we went out at 6am this morning to get in some shooting before it got super hot out. This morning was perfect, no wind whats so ever. Just after shooting from the 100 we moved everything out to the 200 and it just happen that the wind started to gust. Just my luck. Well anyways my groups opened way up, so I quit. lol No we just moved into some cover so we could play the 17 some.

Before headin home for the day, I had a few rounds left and I wanted to see how the would perform on some gophers. Well it doesnt show it from this photo I took, but I was laughing my arse off shooting some of these little guys. I finally got one to fly about 6-8 feet in the air. It was funny to see for the first time.

This guy only flew acouple feet back

As for the trial and errors. What I was doing wrong, was I wasnt putting enough lube inside my case when I was sizing it. There wasnt that much resistance but I guess it was enough to stretch the neck/shoulder back out and that made my bolt kind of hard to close. Well thats in the past now (thanks ALOT Carl) and Im thinking of picking up a "Lyman Carbide Decap Rod". Its suppost to help. I guess we"ll see since its only 35 bucks to my door.

cheers

Nice shooting! That is one messed up grass rat! As for your neck sizing technique, which lube are you using? Very little lube is required in this step, and as per the Speer 14 manual (reloading step 5 I believe), dry neck brushing (in your case, with the small neck brush) is often enough to allow the case to pass over the expander ball with minimal resistance.

However, I usually dry brush the case necks AND apply this: DRY CASE NECK LUBE . All you do is dip a very small portion of your neck into the media and you're ready to size without any neck stretch. Cheap (like 4 bucks), clean and very effective, and you are not required to remove this media after sizing. Just my .02.

And good choice in load selection, it is hard to beat varget topped with the Vmax. Once you get to playing around a bit, try some Speer TNT in 50grain, I doubt you would be disappointed. Works great in most 1 in 12 twist or 1 in 9 .223 rifles, and performs with the surgical precision of a scalpel on paper. Performs more like a stick of trinitrotoluene on varmints :D Cheers!

That is nice shooting!

I use dry lube like metalmike for the inside of case necks, it works really good.

On another note, where did you find a Stevens in 223? I haven't seen them anywhere.

thx

Im using the case lube-2 that came with my kit. The stuff you dribble on the pad. As for applying it, I trimmed down a 223cal mop and put alittle on that and then spin it around inside the neck. Thats the best method I found so far that works for me.

Now that I found a good round with the 53gr and varget, I was thinking of another round. I was looking at maybe a 60gr vmax or one of the tnt offerings.

cheers

thanks BW

I might have to look into some drylube. thx

I bought it used last year off a local hutterite. I got the 223 because of how cheap the rounds were, but now that Im into reloading Im thinking of something like the 22-250 or maybe a 243. Ill do this winter with the 223 because I wanna see how these rounds work on the winter yote season.

thx guys

I would like to try a fwe more different types of rounds and powder down the road. So far the wifey has been cool with all my new spending getting this all up and running. I dont really know how far I want to push it. :) I do need some more 53gr Vmaxes though. I saw that SFRC had a few boxes in.

Well I did ordered the Lyman Carbide Decap Rod. Should have it in two weeks. I hope it helps.

Looks like you got that load worked out. Good shooting. I shoot alot of the 53gr vmax. Love what they do on gophers and work very nice on coyotes.

I know of where to get you some 53gr vmax. Pm me if you want.
