223 load

"...the old Hornady's manual..." That'll do. The only thing is it has data for Hornady bullets only and limited numbers and types of powders. All bullet maker's books are like that.
"...wanna be on the minimal damage side..." Pick a different bullet. Those are varmint bullets that are made to expand rapidly upon impact with zero regard to saving the hide. Big holes, usually. Check your hunting regs about FMJ bullets if you're hide hunting.
"...a little more power over the 400?..." Magnum primers burn a bit hotter for a bit longer. They're made for igniting hard to light powders and cold weather shooting. Otherwise, you don't need 'em unless your manual says to use 'em. Like Mike says, you're shooting in winter.
"...sure I was compressing the powder..." Compressed loads are nothing to worry about. Some will argue they're more consistent due to the powder being against the primer hole, but that's nonsense. It doesn't matter one way or the other.

Instead of starting a new thread Im just going to put it here

Well I just picked up a RCBS trickler today and wanted to try it out. Well..... why the hell did I not get one sooner. Wow does it ever make life easier. lol If anyone is on the fence, run out and pick one up. Its money well spent. :) I can only speak for the RCBS trickler, but I really like that it can just sit there out of the way and when you need to use it, its there. heh

Had to post a pic of it

My next loads will be with tac

Been loving Tac!! I bought 1LB and used it, made some great loads Loved it and now have 10LB's sitting on the shelf... It meters amazingly well (consistent) being a ball powder, burns pretty damn clean in my AR and doesn't seem temp sensitive... best of all its cheapish and doesn't completely fill a case like Varget!

24.5Gr of Tac under a 77Gr Sierra Matchking HPBT has been amazingly accurate for me out to about 550Yards

Thanks for the comments guys.

I think Im running out of time to do some more load development this year. Im kind of happy with what I have for this winter, as long as the 53gr vmax are good for fur. I know Ill be playing around alot next year.

I think Im going to pick up a aftermarket barrel from Jerry this winter. That and a choate stock for this lil rifle. So Ill have to find a new load for it anyways. :)

I was cabelas when it opened up this week. I wanted to buy some 50gr sierra BK to try out, but none to be found. Saw the price of the 55's and wow I can see why the vmaxes are used alot. They were like 10 bucks cheaper than the bk's. Anyways talking about cableas. Anyone here have a buddy that works their because I want to pick up a foxpro hellfire, but I heard that with one of their discounts they can pick them up for under 200 bucks. Anyone have a connection?

tagged for future reference as I will eventually reload some 5.56 brass for my savage axis .223, keeping in mind previous comments I've heard about minor differences in case capacity.
