Hey all. Im just wondering if anyone knows if a .223 with a 1:9 twist rate is able to stabalize a 75gr bullet? Right now Im throwing 68gr and it is working great. Just thought I would ask before I go out and spend the money only to find out it wont like them .

Thanks.

Some folks have had success with a 1/9 and a 75 gr bullet. Some haven't. Your just on the edge of stabilization there.

Theres only one way to find out. ;)

For me the 68-69 gr bullet weights are always winners in 1/9.

Might, might not. The exact bullet could make a difference. Amax may be longer than some other 75s. One way to find out.

I must be the luckiest guy in Canada, because both my rifles shoot this bullet well.

The 223 Ackley puts a magazine full under an inch at a tad more than 3000 fps. Can't remember the velocity of the straight 223, but it is nowhere close to that and shoots almost as well.

Come to think of it, River Rat gave a 223 to his son, and I think he shoots this bullet in his rifle.

Okay, here's something quite interesting. Got to thinking about why you guys cannot get the 75 A-Max to shoot in your rifles, so went and checked my supply. Was going to measure the length of a bullet and discovered there are two variations of this bullet, a 1:9 and a 1:8 twist compatible.

However, they both have the same manufacturer's number! Can't believe I didn't notice this before.

Which bullet are you using in your rifles?

I had especially bad luck, cause I also tried Hornady AmAx 75s in a 1:8 twist barrel and could not stabalize them. Thats right 1:8. I fail. Stupid Pac-Nor Super Match grade Savage pre-threaded, ready to spin on barrel.

My Rem 700 Police and my Savage LRPV both in 1-9 twists shoot 75 a-maxs. Both shoot MOA or better at 100 yrds. I switched from FED 205M primers to CCI 450s as It was hit and miss with the FED and the 75s seemed to make a big differance.
