22lr and grouse.

I use solids, even if you smack the breast it leaves a .22 cal hole all the way through and since the bullet doesn’t expand there is minimal damage.

My first twenty years of hunting in Ontario I used a open sight Diana 34, 177cal. Easy to hit them in head as 30yds would be about max distance, they are not hard to get close to in the northern bush.
I've since switched to 22lr and a 1.5-4x32 using subsonic hp ammo,

I will have to see if I can find it in the ontario regs
Get yourself a slingshot and some marbles or ball bearings or some round lead balls from the fishing supply store near you.
But, first and foremost go have a snoop through your Provincial Hunting Regs.
I have thrown a stick and have used large rocks to knock the grouse silly long enough to run up and finish them off .
Of course I have a Provincial Hunting lic. in my pocket while doing so.

I like the sporting option of only shooting them on the wing with a shotgun. Sometimes you need a partner to throw sticks at them to make them fly. More fun and more challenging I find and less chance of meat damage.

Good day all! I use a 22lr for most of my small game hunting, and I find that most 22lr bullet destroy a lot of meet if the birds are shot in the chest cavity, there has to be better bullets than others, I’m thinking of trying to find some lead free ammo maybe it will be better! I try for head shot most of the time but they have pretty small head those little buggers !!
Alberta allows air pistols, but I’ve never come across one that really appealed to me.

I use a .22 Win Mag. I have it sighted in with CCI 30gr hollowpoints. Headshots are really the only way to go. My little trick is that I have sighted in 2" hight at 25yds, so while that little head Bob's back and forth, I aim at the base of the neck. Works so good My daughter popped one at 100yds this fall. I was so shocked I ranged it 3 times just to be sure of it.

thanks guys! I know in Norway they hunt ptarmigans and capercaillie with fun center fire rifles. That is why I was thinking of lead free rounds they are faster but maybe less meat damage due to just a hole?
I have a friend that used to use short low velocity 22 ammo and he lost a lot of ptarmigans using them!
I just need to be a better shot I guess and find the most accurate ammo for my rifles!
That's the ticket. Or maybe more accurate rifles. My Brno 22s will shoot most anything close enough to make it do the funky chicken
