.22LR bullet trap thoughts? Not 100% sure where to ask this.

Quick simple question,
I have not researched types of steel. I read a bit about AR500 targets, and .223, etc...
All I might have laying around is 1/2" steel. I was trying to recycle, and reduce cost as much as possible,
hence why I didn't immediately go with steel as first option. (I realize it is the responsible thing to do now though)

The steel that I *might* have laying around was decently thick and really heavy, about 1/2 inch. Rusts easily. But I don't see a .22lr going through it.

Any ideas where to pick up sheets of used steel for cheap if I can't find any scraps?

The bullet catcher in my lab uses ground up tires in a big metal tube with a plate at the back. Semi sealing foam keeps it in the tube. It is super effective. I shoot .50bmg into it and the bullets don’t do much to the back plate after 2’ of tire rubber.

sand.... how old school :)

well having seen some of the range trap designs including wet traps that use a fluid flowing over the ramp to control bullet dust an deceleration drums that have their own negative air pressure and HEPA filters again for dust control, I would not bother with any sort of 45 deg metal plate with wet sand solution.

there is some good information here and if your only using .22RF the energy you need to absorbed is fairly minor. A rubber mudflap as a self healing layer over your trap is a fantastic idea much better material then wood. Wood you would be replacing on a regular basis as your bulleyes get shot our quickly. Catching the bullets using a smash plate, Ok for 22RF but anything bigger is going to be a problem.

If you construct a funnel and a deceleration drum I would suggest doing a vertical one and then all the bullets end up in a bucket under the drum.

just did a quick google search http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?26627-Bullet-trap-ideas-for-recycling-lead/page27 post 536 looks interesting

Make a steel trap and hang a mudflap from a semi off the front. Easy to staple to, easy to replace especially if you know a trucker or a shop owner who has to throw out any that get "too short". The rubber should prevent any spatter coming back and will sort of seal lead dust.
