I'm looking for a .22LR insert for my Stoeger Condor Outback O/U 12-gauge shotgun. I'd like to carry only one gun for hunting, and its versatility is already quite good (interchangeable choke tubes, shot or slugs), but the ability to fire .22LR would be useful for small game (much easier to carry a box of .22LR than a box of shotshells!).

I intend to use it for game at a maximum range of 25 yards, and would like to ideally have groupings of 1" at that range (max 2").

So far I've managed to find the following:

Dina Arms:
ht tp://store.dinaarms.com/product_p/12ga22lr.htm
These are the same length as a shotshell (2.5"), so the rifling would be very short (1.5"?).
Does anybody have experience with these? Would they meet my accuracy requirements?

Update: see preliminary range report, post # 21.

MCAce:
ht tp://www.mcace.com/shotguninserts.htm
These come in 10" or 18" lengths. I would probably use the 10" (lighter, easier to pack). These would most likely be quite a bit more accurate than the Dina Arms adapter (being twice the length of a pistol barrel).
However they are somewhat cumbersome to use: once the round has been fired, one must remove the adapter (being careful not to lose the rimfire plug which fits over the round), and remove the cartridge using a rod.

Are there any adapters like the MCAce (around 10" long), but which don't require a rimfire plug, and removal of the adapter after each shot?

I've also seen some Lothar Walther .22LR adapters, but they are only for centerfire rifle calibres (not for shotguns), and require the same procedure as the MCAce for firing and extracting the round.

MAN! Those MCACE 10" inserts are tempting.

I already have some of the Dina arms ones on the way, but as I said elsewhere, my accuracy expectations are low.

If had know about the 10" inserts I would have gone that way.

Krieghoff of Germany made a nifty little insert barrel for drillings, some were 44 CM long and some were 22CM long. There is a good thread on Accurate reloading forums about them. type http:// in front of this URL: forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/335105333/m/935109049
They can be found at gun shows if you ask the right people. I have three, two for my 16 ga. drilling (.22 LR and .22 mag) and another 12 ga. / .22 Mag that is surplus to my needs. They are not cheap, but they work exactly as they should.

I believe that I've seen similar adapters on the Numrich site for .22LR, with the chamber offset instead of using a plug. Of course, the downside is that you'll have to put the adapter in the same way each time to group consistently.

Longwalker,
Thank you for the info regarding the Kreighoff inserts.
It's too bad your extra one isn't in 22LR; I would have been interested.

How much do they go for?

Beadwindow,
The ones listed at Numrich are indeed the Dina Arms adapters.
I don't mind having to align them the same way for consistency. Easy to do with an O/U.

Anyone used those Dana ones?

I wonder how well they would feed in a pump? Would be dandy, especially with some low speed 22LR for early morning plinking!

I ordered a few different adapters from Dina last week, although my order hasnt shipped yet, I look foward to trying them at the range with my backpacker.... if i get adventurous I might try them with my 870 as well. I envision the bullet tumbling in the barrel and doing something horrific, so it will be a fun/nerve racking first shoot when I get them.

I have never heard of such a thing before.

How do you load and cycle bullets in these inserts?
How are they kept in place during operation without firing out the end?
Why would you want a 12g weight gun with a heavy insert that fires .22lr?

Sorry this is new to me.

Looking forward to your range reports. I ordered some Dina Arms adapters and will report back the results once they arrive.

I'm still interested in longer inserts, such as the MCAce or Kreighoff.

I have already posted in the Outlaw poll thread about the Dina adapters I have inbound and the email I sent to Dlask inquiring about longer adapters like MCACE makes.

I will post more here when I know it I guess.

I dont know of anybody else in Canada besides Dlask that might be willing and able to make up a bunch or 10 inch .22 adapters. Maybe somebody could hit up their favourite machinist or gunsmith and see what we can come up with.

If somebody could create an adapter with an extractor that works off of the extractor on a single or double barrel's extractor, that would be the cats pyjamas. No only would reloading be easier, but the insert would then have an index point, making the zero far more likely to be repeatable.

The ideal solution for me would be an adapter with a offset barrel (like the Dina Arms), but 10" or so in length. The plug system used in the MCAce is too ackward for me.
I think it would be too difficult to have the shotgun's extractor pull out the spent casing, but I'm okay with using a fingernail or small tool for this purpose.
It's also easy for me to index the adapter the same way each time it is inserted into my O/U barrel.

I'll contact MCAce and see if they'd be willing to produce theirs that way. It would be interesting to see if Dlask can make them as well.

I'd use it with my O/U shotgun as follows:
- Aimed shot with the .22LR firing from the 1st barrel (bottom barrel in my case, since the Outback's trigger is non-selectable).
- 2nd shot with a shotshell if I wound the critter and it starts getting away (don't want a wounded animal to suffer needlessly).:(

I got a reply from Dlask

No dice.

They have a 6 month back log for existing products and have no time to R&D a new one.
