.22LR inserts for shotguns

Range report: Dina Arms .22LR adapters for 12 gauge

Here is my preliminary range report for the Dina Arms .22LR adapters.

I used them with my Stoeger Condor Outback O/U 12-gauge shotgun, firing from the bottom barrel (the one which fires first). Each, time I was careful to always align them the same way, to avoid any variance due to the off-centre .22 chamber (has to be that way so the firing pin strikes the rim of the casing).
I used a bench rest, shooting at a 21x21" handgun target, at a distance of 25m. Ammunition used was Remington Thunderbolt (high velocity).

Adapter #1: 2 shots out of 5 hit the paper, 9" apart, roughly centred vertically, but 8.5" left of my Point of Aim (POA). No idea where the other 3 rounds went.
See picture below.

Adapter #2:
1st grouping: 6.25"; 2" low, and 1" left.
2nd grouping: 6"; 4" low, 3" left.
Somewhat better than Adapter #1, but still not very consistent.
See picture below.

Clearly, the results were disappointing. Even the better of the two adapters only showed 25 Minute-of-Angle (MOA) accuracy, and grouping location was inconsistent.

I'll try with different ammo (Remington CeeBee, Target, and hyper-velocity), to see if better results can be obtained, but so far, I don't have high hopes of acceptable accuracy with these inserts.

Range report: Dina Arms .22LR adapters for 12 gauge (pics)

Here are the pics of the groupings described above:

Overall picture of the 21x21" target. "Grouping" #1 is on the far left (two rounds joined by a diagonal line).
Groupings 2 and 3 are the two triangles on the bottom of the target (fired from a 2nd insert).
Note: the big holes are slug groupings :), fired during the same session. Much more accurate than the Dina Arms .22LR inserts.:dancingbanana:

"Grouping" #1 (I'm using the term loosely ;) ), using the 1st Dina Arms .22LR insert:
Notice the keyholing on the bottom hole.

Groupings #2 and 3, using a 2nd (relatively more accurate) Dina Arms .22LR insert:

As mentioned, I'll try the inserts with different types of .22LR ammo to see if things improve.

For now, I'll stick with slugs: :):dancingbanana:

I use a Savage 24C... .22 over 20 gauge. Both barrels shoot to exactly the same POA @ 50 yards and better yet, I don't have to take out (some apparently crappy by the looks of those pictures) inserts to reload! :nest:

:D

I don't think the lack of accuracy is only due to the short barrel, since I have one adapter which shoots noticeably better than the other. There must be some difference in the machining of the barrels as well (diameter and/or rifling).

I'm aware of the MCAce adapters. I mentioned their pros and cons in my posts #1 and #13 of this thread. :)

What would be ideal is a 10" insert (like the MCAce), but with an offset chamber (like the Dina Arms), so that a plug is not required. This would make extraction of the .22LR round much handier.

I tried to contact MCAce to discuss this option with him, but Ace is a hard man to get a hold of. Best way to reach him is over the phone, in the evening (forget about email; I tried several times and got no reply). If he gets sufficient demand for the 10" insert with offset barrel, we may be able to convince him to produce some.

I'm hoping I will finally have the time to test mine out at the range this thursday (I have 9mm and .410 adapters) Had thes Dana adapters for a few weeks now, but I've been too busy replacing flooring in my house to get to the range (or on off days too sore :) )

I wonder how hard it would be to modify the dina adaptor so you could thread a short barrel extension onto it.....

How does ACE do his .22's? I thought they were off set as well....

ya i was wondering about that too i mean how hard would it be for them to add even a 4" barrel anything so you can get a bit more FPS and accuracy

again then you have to buy one of the inserts from MCACE and i read on other forums thats he's hard to get in contact with and that the actual prices are higher then what he shows on his site.

Here are the results of the 9mm adapter from today. Both targets were at 7 Meters, fired from my Dominion Arms Backpacker

First target, 8 rounds of 147grain, point of aim was the 5, except for the 3 on the right, where I was aiming at the 2 (1 keyholed)

Second target, 8 more rounds of 147grain.... I believe only one punched through properly and the rest keyholed, or had some wobble to them anyway. I think its from the very shallow rifling in the adapter, getting filled with burnt powder.... I'd need to take a bore brush along next time to really see.

I didnt bother shooting it at any greater distance, but I dont think it was too bad for accuracy, considering the bead/groove sights on the backpacker.
