22LR shortage - what's going on?

Didn't realise that this was such a huge issue. I knew that some places were out of stock but I just picked up a case of 5000 .22lr mini mag hp for $320 on Friday. It was sitting there calling my name. Couldn't just leave it on the floor.

For the life of me, I can't understand this annual thread of "22LR ammo shortage"! It keeps showing up every year and is proven wrong every year. Even when suppliers and retailers post here that there is no shortage, some people insist they know better. Go figure! One store or a couple of stores being out because they didn't order enough does not mean a shortage.

No Silver because I haven't looked for them. But I take your word for it. Still, it is far from a 22 ammo shortage.

It is for me when no one has it or anything else in quality target ammo ... even junk bulk is in short supply

Check SFRC and Canada ammo as an example more out of stock than in stock with no updates as to when anything will come in

Some retailers will always have stock, but online retailers have been very short of several well liked ( maybe not by your gun ) brands like Federal 525 bulk copper washed .. Canadian tire seens to have it in small amounts out in the non GTA area , but most likely do to established supply contracts that Canadian Tire have. Personally I would not put Winchester 22lr in my ammo safe ( experience and my units are mostly semi auto ) , have never used remmington, but to many posters seem to give it a hard time

Canada Ammo , SFRC. Etc. Online retealers ( bulk ) can't seem to have Federal for long ... small retailers do not know how to ship .. if you have to pay shipping , you want bulk , and cheap shipping .. living in GTA has a few advantages, but my range is 5 min away .. has a $35 fee , everyone shoots trap, so always a spot and no range fudds to question what or how many rounds I am shooting :)

I would have to weigh in on the side of the OP. To many big online retailers are blank at the same time and have been for some time.

I personally bought my needs in early 2012 .. writing was on the wall that prices were going up , Was paying shipping so bought my CCI stuff in bulk, and as no one was jumping on the Federal at my local CTC, I bought 12 or so boxes at $18.99 so it would not get dusty. Although I did get 600 rounds of CCI sub-sonic today .. online. Should have bought it in 2012 but could not forsee the need. Do not imagine we will see CCI suppressor in Canada just because of the name, would have rather had that as 100fps slower than sub-sonic.

Large capacity, 22L.R. Mags, Two Teenage Grandsons, 2 Ruger 10/22s, and 3 of Quentin Wipfs Rolling Gopher Targets, have cut into my stash, SERIOUSLY.

For me, it's those darned McFadden speed loaders. Makes it so easy to load up the mags for most of my .22 hand guns. I go through 500 rounds easily in one range session. Once in a while, have been through 2 bricks. Good thing it doesn't fit my S&W Model 41 mags. I'd really be going through a lot of CCI SV then :)

Trombleys Tackle Box in Orillia has 0 shortage.

Boxes of 5000 rounds of Peters .22 High velocity for $275 (or priced individually as well in packs of 10, or singles)

Federal 500 rounds for $29.99

Even some CCI, and other stuff

Orillia CT has CCI 325 packs, and 100 packs, and some winchester 333 packs in, and even a remington bucket.

I think it is a time of ....you get what you get with regards to brands. I recall before I would have a choice of many different brands. Now we have the ammo, not as many choices.

Agree ... We have it a lot better up here as manufactures would appear to be honoring their supply contracts to Canada, but in the US to keep delivering product corners are being cut. Some of it affects us .. go to the Nosler web site and see how many projectile styles are still suspended, read the comments that have been made with regard to reducing 22lr production in order to provide for .223 volume, etc.

If Canada Ammo sells out there is still large amounts of other brands to fall back on from secondary sources, but they ( Canada Ammo ) can't just be re supplied on a whim, so there is an obvious shortage, but because we have other options we just do not see it.

There is an obvious powder shortage, 22lr takes powder, not much but it still takes powder to produce .. many stories of CCI slipping in quality re 22lr do to production lines turned up, Bulk in the US is not an easy find .. but yet I was on a site in Canada today that listed Bulk CCI , norinco crates of .223 as all in stock .. so do I presume Canada Ammo wants to not sell ammo, SFRC gets a better mark up on remmington, or Canadian Ammo Supply has a better line .. or they just came up on rotation for re-supply .. spring is comming .. grankids want to shoot a brick of 22lr .. we can still do it where it is not gauranteed in the US.

With surplus .223 off the table for now, the .29 cent round is poof gone, will .223 shooters go back to 22lr for the first few months of the season to hord their remaining supply of bulk ,223 or belly up to the bar for $.60 cent rounds of .223 .. online sources are strained now .. by June there could easily be more pressure on 22lr supplies from that change alone. Time will tell. My bell weather supplier, Canadian Tire has not had 22lr federal bulk copper washed for two months now, but they do have 11 boxes of American eagle .223 ... 60 miles away Canadian tire "had " 4 bricks of federal bulk 22lr copper, but they are gone as of last week ( not me ) .. The local ammo shop within 100 mile radius wanted to sell me box of Americsn Eagle 45acp for $48 in the spring of 2012 when SFRC had them for $18.99.. Now you know why people pay shipping or buy components and hand load.

Most places I tried for CCI standard on line have it by the box of a 100 for 9.99 but not by the brick. That would add up to $50.00 a brick and I can get SK Standard for $53.00 a brick so what so no problem seeing which way to go!

CCI Mini Mags on the EE for $500 a case!.....it's started!

Just because you guys live in an area that has a lot of .22lr shooters, and that deplete your local supply, that doesn't mean that .22lr is scarce. I would think it was scarce too if I only looked at Canadian Tire and Walmart..............
