22LR shortage - what's going on?

I didn't see much of a .22 shortage here in Ottawa.....even with the hoarding this past year(Ive got more squirrelled away then I'll ever shoot), there seemed to be plenty on the shelves @ the gun stores. Places like Canadian Tire ran kinda low,but I tend not to buy ammo there. Lebaron ran out of 9mm @ one point, which kinda spooked me though.

Well I just cleared ammosupply.ca out of federal auto match. If I'm paying the same amount for shipping for 3 boxes or 7 boxes, I might as well buy all 7! I'm not sure if the shortage will come to be real, but I might as well have enouh ammo to last me into the spring.

Don't wait for shortages, buy when you find it and stack it, it doesn't go bad and it never goes down in price.

How many years before one can go through all that?

BTW, as usual, no .22 shortage around here (South Ontario)!

That's only 52 weeks of shooting for some folks. some guys do actually shoot a lot, for others that will last many generations. In a SHTF scenario, about 20-40 rounds is all a guy will ever use.

Depends on individual consumption. Some areas have lots of people, and some areas have "thin" populations. We have lots of .22lr up here, cause there just isn't a lot of people up here. You live in Burnaby area, lots of shooters there, and a much longer season to shoot in. Does the weather ever get bad there??? (envy creeping in)

Was supposed to snow so far it's just rain HAHA! More less crapy weather...

My recent visit to Las Vegas turned up little or no rimfire ammunition in stock. A clerk at BassPro LV advised that what little shows up it sold out right away even with their 3 box (not brick) maximum purchase. He also laughed at the suggestion that they would sell it by the brick. The rimfire shortage has been on going in the US and to a lesser extent in Canada for over a year. My rep from the largest Canadian distributor who works in the largest warehouse in Canada, yesterday said there was no .22 ammo in stock as it is shipped as soon as it comes in. Canadian distributers and dealers who are proactive have seen a small but regular supply of ammo coming in. We are a little down in the variety of .22 ammo we would like but have large volumes of at least 10 different makes and styles by the brick starting at $25/ 525. Other volume consumed ammo like .223, 308, 9mm, 40 and .45 ACP will be in short supply at some time or another in the next year. Phil.

How do we see what you have in stock/price so we can order some?
Cheers Bob

Spawn-Inc, did you read P&D's post of 22 ammo supply? Do you still stand by the tin-foil hat comment? 22 ammo is in short supply and will be for some time, AND coming down the pipe is an ammo shortage of several other types of calibers. Its real, its happening, and its going to get worse.

Hornady IS sending out lists to distributors, wholesalers, that warns of Ammo that WILL NOT BE SHIPPED to Canada until further notice. they don't even give a time frame as they are that uncertain about availability. Its much worse on the backend, than the shooting public realizes.

If you or your family plan on shooting for the next few years, buy the ammo you think you will need, when you see it, as You might not be able to buy it when you want to. That's all.

i understand there is a shortage, but it's not because the last smelter closed, it's because of panic buying....

if there was no newtown shooting or obama in office and everything was normal and the last smelter shut down then, there would be no shortages. maybe a bit more sales because of people who think it will effect it, but otherwise supply would be just fine.

I give..... you are right. Wiping out the local lead supply in the North American economy will have absolutely no affect on either the supply or price of lead in the future.
