What do you guys thinking would be a good candidate? I'm not looking for a $2500 Anchutz. Looking for a good quality rifle. Good entry level? Was kind of wondering about the Savage MARK I FVT. What are the peep sights on this like Would you be able to upgrade them to some nice Lymans? ?

Ideally I want some to shoot silhouettes with and something for the odd competition. So I'm not 100% sure in what I am looking for.

Thanks everyone!

You can find these for $5-600. Will shoot with almost anything out there. They also have a rather high cool factor.

12/15 small action Martini made by BSA. You dont see them much on the EE but I see a few at every gun show I go to around here.

Any of the Savage MkII's will drive tacks, all day long. The MkII FVT is equipped with target sights, heavy barrel, and AccuTrigger. It will do what you want, right out of the box, and for a very attractive price. They have a huge following amongst target shooters.

I have the mark II FVT, same as the mkI only a repeater that comes with a 5 round mag.
It is insanely accurate! I like the martini's also, but they are really a one trick pony and to get one in great condition will cost you. That, and they are only single shot and can't be scoped easily. I spent a couple years tinkering with them before deciding to sell the last one I had and bought the savage... I couldn't be happier.

The sights are very good for the price and are the Williams FP TK in the rear with a .50x1" aperture disk, and a Williams globe front which comes with 8 interchangeable inserts. It will accept other sights such as lyman etc via the rail on the receiver, and the front can be swapped for other front sights also. It is also drilled and tapped for scope bases if you want to swap them out for a scope.

The barrel on mine is extremely nice. Super bright bore that slugged perfect, nice tight chamber.

Only down side is the crappy stock!! Expect to add a cheek riser or swap the stock out for a boyds. Otherwise, you are paying for an exceptional barreled action and great target sights.

Here is mine with a homemade cheek riser, and a couple groups shot with it.

This sight block is also dovetailed into the barrel giving you multiple aftermarket options

Here is 9+1 flyer, 50m

50 rounds at 50m, it really likes the CCI standard velocity ammo. Eley is even better.

Awesome! Thanks Mikey. I have already been eye balling up a Richards microfit Wildcat.

Oooh, good choice! I would like to swap mine out someday... but i just can't be bothered. It's actually growing on me. I'll see how the tupperware holds up in the summer heat, that may change my mind.
Cheers.

I followed the second option mentioned by mikeystew, that is, replacing the original synthetic stock with a Boyd's laminated wood stock. I used the Boyd's Rimfire Thumbhole Varmint stock (cost $99 US + shipping - all in about $140). The Boyd's Rimfire Target stock would also be likely to work well.

The MkII FVT barreled action fit into the inletted stock without a problem, the only slight mod. required is the removal of about 1/4" of wood to make room for the rear sight mounting block. These stocks also require purchase of a trigger guard and floorplate (bottom metal) and longer action (bedding) screws - all of these parts are available from Boyd's or from Savage Arms. I got them from Savage because it was quicker.

With the Boyd's stock the eye/sight alignment is right on; with the original synthetic stock which drops too much I could not get proper cheek weld and correct eye/sight alignment.

After I have done some range testing I will start a thread complete with pics outlining the whole project. My thanks to mikeystew for his help in this.

My club uses the single shot MkI FVT for the Jr .22 program. I've got to shoot them on occasion when there's a spare bench available. The stock peep sights are actually darn good. If there's anything to upgrade it would be to get a rear cup with a smaller aperature. But there's truly no need to replace the overall sight assembly with anything else.

If there's a bug in the soup it's the combining of a stock with a low comb height with the higher placed peep sights. There's no risk of a cheek weld. In actual fact it's more of a chin weld. Replacing the stock with a thumbhole style with the far higher comb would likely be a very nice upgrade to the Mk II FVT.
