234 Wildcat Family....ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

All right now.........I'm back in my southern B.C. home and here is a box of .234, 105 gn bullets in RBT and a box of .234, 105 gn bullets in a flat base............both bonded core for hunting of course. So tonight I'll be making test loads and hoping I get a great group. However I'm taking it deer hunting and don't really need great groups...........adequate will work. Weather and sun Gods permitting I'll be checking loads AND chronographing tomorrow.

attaboy Douglas!

I have 500+ .23 cal bullets and a honking big stainless .23 BR barrel here waiting for a build...........:dancingbanana:

Just waiting to figure out what one of the Douglas cartridges this big boy should be chambered for.................

Doug

Weather is not co-operating today, hope tomorrow is better...........in the meantime, loading some loads for my new-to-me 378 and probably for my refurbed 375 Sako Safari...........have much to shoot at this point, all the way back to the 375 Ruger testing I was doing.
Looks like I may need another Schutsenfest...................

Well I did a little shooting today with the 230 Douglas, found the max with Retumbo and 105 gn bullets.........didn't have time to chronograph it but it shot a couple loads fair, just under MOA for 3 shots. Certainly good enough for deer hunting, but more work needed yet to wring out the best accuracy. It would seem that possibly US 869 or maybe H50BMG or some of the new RL33 might be the magic powder............more work to be done yet.
The short action Marlin was a poor choice for this cartridge, it needs another 1/4" magazine length to be a repeating rifle. I may have to work some magic on it or just yank this barrel and make a lynx on it with another barrel. I'm pretty sure I could then just change the breech face to work with a Rem 700 and rechamber it again.
Off to harvest some WT tomorrow morn, will be back in 10 days or so and will do more development then..............Hopefully with photos of a big buck killed with the 230 Douglas, y'all wish me luck............

Keep the smoke owtta yer eyes and yah won't need no luck.
Less'en yew gitzs the furr jitters?
Naaaaaaaah, yer tooooooo old fer jitters......... don't fergit the knife sharp'in stone.............
And yer spec's tuh see where'n tuh slice the paperwerk.
Ask me oww I know..........summabeeeeeeeeatch.

So should I cross the Marlin off my list of possible donors for me to make a Lynx on? I am still searching for a 22-250 to buy as a donor rifle.

Playing with my new Browning .223 and have been floored by the accuracy. Perhaps I won the lottery on this little rifle because the final three rounds I put through it actually made one slightly large hole. Happy Happy Happy......:dancingbanana:

Assembling my Mauser 96 project after finally finishing the stock. It is coming together well and I am looking forward to my first experience with a 6.5 x 55.

Would it be in bad taste (or would it even work?) to use a Zastava as a donor rifle? If my knowledge base is correct they use a Mauser 98 action don't they?

Still waiting for the chance to build a Lynx.
Regards,
Dave

You could buy a Ruger 77....................

.....................and I know where you could buy it.................... (just shoot me a pm if you'd like)

Doug

Thanks for the offer Doug. I still have my first rifle that I purchased by myself in the very early 70's in M77 in the "forbidden" caliber. It has performed flawlessly and is accurate beyond my expectations or needs. However, the lack of a removable magazine has been a constant annoyance for me that just won't go away.

It has got to be just a personality quirk on my part because as I said the rifle has been flawless, but it twitches my itches every time I use the rifle so I have promised myself I will only buy drop magazine rifles henceforth. Where upon I promptly went out and bought a M96 Mauser in 6.5 x 55 which of course is a blind mag.
Insert definition of insanity here <<<<<<<<<<.:runaway:

Having said all that...finding any rifle in 22-250 has been a bit of a ghost search and adding conditions like a drop mag will only make the search more difficult. At this point I am becoming resigned to buying a new rifle and cannibalizing it for two reasons.
1. The price of used rifles.
2. Finding a rifle with a drop mag.

I have time because it will be some time before I am able to lay my hands on a .234 barrel. In the meantime I will watch and drool.
Regards,
Dave

Well gentlemen, the 230 Douglas is one of the most devastating cartridges ever turned loose on a whitetail deer. The Matrix 105 gn zips right through them BUT it destroys every tissue within 12" of where is zips through. My first shot I lead him a bit more than necessary and removed the entire brisket and broke the off side shoulder, he went down within a few paces, but sitting upright and very alive still so I put another through the ribs at about 100 meters, first shot about 150 mtrs. Everone's reaction was the same........WOW..........as large tufts of hair floated across the snow in the wind. The impact of the bullet literally ripped him out of his upright position and laid him flat on his other side, it was impressive as hell to see. The entrance hole is almost the size of a softball and the exit the size of a volleyball........This ain't no "eat up to the bullet hole" cartridge, in fact 2 poorly placed bullets from this cartridge could net zero edible meat off a whitetail deer, All I can say is..........HOLY SH!T !! The bullets effect and devastation is far beyond what I expected from this cartridge, there is absolutely no question as to it's suitability as a whitetail deer cartridge, or mule deer or quite possibly elk..........Pics up when I get home.

YIKES!! And my inclination of late for my hunting reloads has been towards 'something' with the ability of' leaving behind' a little more in the way of edible table fare. In a number of calibres, that's ment a switch to the likes of Barnes and specifically, their TTSX. May help explain why my Daughter has 'defined' me as a deep freeze hunter.

Oy vey! I'm a freezer hunter too, which explains my inclination towards milder loads for my hunting rifles, but the .236 "Vaporizer" would sure be fun on feral cats & raccoons.:):):)

True enough. However, there are;) governing 'factors' applicable to fur bearing animals that have to or should be observed. On some of what you've named, items like my old custom Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp,:) work well and I've posted these on previous occasions.

And the beauty of this old girl, it loves 50gr Hornady V-MAX.
