.243 or .270 win?

.243 win easily takes down the tiny deer in the QCI. I used a Remington 700 Mountain rifle in .260 there. Was more than enough. Deer are everywhere and ranges are close.

Thanks for the input guys, it never occurred to me about a 6.5 creedmoor as not many people seem to shoot that here. May be worth a look. .243 just seemed to be the norm up here that’s mostly my reasoning for looking into it

Your going to be paying a lot more for ammo with the 6.5 creedmoor or how ever you spell it . you can pick up the 243 or 270 at most of the Canadian tire stores . not the 6.5. I have found the 270 to recoil far less than the 3006. it's your choice . you can fire a heavier bullet out of the 270 if need be.

There is only one rifle that you ever need. It's the flat shooting, hard hitting .270. It will take any deer or elk in BC. I have shot moose and deer with mine. Very little recoil too.

.257 Roberts....... but between the two you listed - .243

nice choice!
i like the 257 because it hasnt the hyper velocity the 243 has, meaning a stout projectile of modest weight is goin to behave very well on deer sized game.
no where the recoil of the 3006 /270 yet produce the goods as the 243 has done.
a bit more of a uncommon calibre however i think you guys have much more choices in factory guns- ammos available, enough to keep even a factory shooter well loaded for the year or more..

Well likely you are asking for a real, IN-SITU .243 comment, the last NECK SHOTS with (Winchester overpriced) Ballistic and Fragmenting Winchester --- shot from less than 100 yards.....Are U listening...the Buck Walked walked.... Away on a neck shot.

I know since I observed that animal,
it dropped on its feet,
that buck struggled towards the home, the deep coolie where it felt was home...
A hot .243 from <102 yards, pure shots, and that buck took afoot, walked, focused its last few minutes of being, I watched it paw each foot placement, the stare of it's eyes,...then as a hunter, or animal with a more proficient weapon.

If any of you think that a bullet, or placement, or caliber, or scope makes you Special, then your have NOT spent any Real Time In the Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

Too right!
here in NZ everyone thinks the paper punchers make good hunting bullets because it explodes an dumps energy.... these deer arnt very strong willed or the shooters are very good shots.
i echo what you;re sayin simply due to the Sambar being able to "soak up" even good chest shots with #### bullets an move into thick cover an be lost---- not ideal!!

tough projies trump fast marketing hype

The Winchester ballistic silvertip is not what most people would call a premium bullet. Pretty thin jacket and more marketing hype than real substance. "Best of the best" it ain't.

But one thing bothers me - if the animal was wounded and slowly walking away, why didn't you shoot again?

I'm no expert, but I have been hunting with a 243 for 25 years. Shot placement and bullet matter. I have never witnessed a deer of any size survive broadside heart/lung shots. Period. Sure you hit it where you wanted? Did you recover the deer? Seems like other factors might be in play here...

If deer are your primary quarry (even dinky coastal blacktails, I would choose a .25 cal or 6.5mm... you already have two long action cartridges... as said above, the .270 does not do much that your .30/06 wont, in practical terms... you might as well choose a short action cartridge... these days, starting out with a new rifle, there is little reason not to choose the 6.5 Creedmoor... rifles and ammo are everywhere, and the ballistics are right in the sweet-spot for your purposes.
The 243 and 270 are more then enough for any deer sized game. The 243 is very loud however easier to shoot as the 270 can have some kick when using larger bullets.

People forget that the for mentioned calibers were the original wonder 6mm’s, but have been ignored by these new YouTube calibers.
