243 vs 6.5 creedmore.

6.5 man bun are maximum age, what?, 2009ish?
Probably loaded somewhat hotter in factory ammo as a result, since 243 must be all of 60yrs old potentially in the same age rifles.

Both will kill deer. I shot my first moose with a 243, not ideal, but what I had. Any advantage by the 6.5 man bun, isn't worth spit until past 500yds. If you don't reload, and predominantly will shoot long range targets.....manbun. Anything else, call heads or tails.
Everyone knows .243 is basically a splitarse round.

Would be interested in seeing how a fast twist 243 does with the heaiver ELD-X, 90gr GMX and 95gr LRX does. Not enough to buy one but they do look like cool options.

243 has a couple grains capacity over the 6mmCM, would be pretty much the same thing at the end of the day.
I'd like to see more factory rifles offered in 6mmCM

I chose the 6CM over the the 243 but would take the 6.5CM over both with the 30.06 as the 2nd rifle. Perfect BG combo in Canada.

More rifles to choose from and tons of factory ammo as well as loading kit. The 6.5 wins it all.

I like the versatility of 243. If the wife calls me to come outside as something is going after our chickens & ducks I know the 243 will take care of anything around. My dad used to hunt with a 243 rifle and I love mine as well. Anything I point it at drops.

A quick comparison at a large Cdn retailer shows several loads for both start at $45 - $75 range , then a few in 6.5 creamer run on up to $100, ffs
so ammo cost is a wash, apples to apples

the 6 creamer didn't take off cuz there isn't enough difference to make shooters switch, whether up from 243 or down from 6.5 creamer

I realize handloaders can manipulate this, but the average hunter just uses off the shelf ammo. Not sure a deer/bear could notice a difference between a 100grain 6mm partition vs 140grain 6.5mm partition. I think the 400 fps velocity would result in a lot more bang flops with the 243 though. Never understood the “dead is dead” argument for the guy that’s about to bring that up. Where and how it dies matters for a lot of us thick woods eastern hunters.

Bang flips seem to come from placement much more than the extra velocity.

I mean they run when you chest shoot them with a 150 grain bullet from a 30-06 too...it aint like the 243 has any kind of a reputation of a "drop em right there" cartridge compared to any other.

Think you had it right with the "deer won't know the difference" part.

Unless one has their heart set on a fast twist 243 shooting very high BC bullets, I like 6.5 CM all around more. More big game capable, can still get 95gr or 100gr varmint type bullets, rate of twist will work with any of it

That would be my inclination as well. I tend to prefer heavier bullets for caliber so naturally I'm not wild about the 243.

I loaded some 180gr SST for a 300 Ultra a buddy couldn't find ammo for this year. He got a nice buck, 225lbs, bang flop, good shot through the lungs, 10ft+ of blood and parts blown out the exit side all over the snow you could fill a shopping bag with lol.
Velocity shocks the #### out them.
But yeah, 30cal vs 243 is not the best comparison lol.

LOL I should have said "up to a certain point". Have a feeling he ain't gonna spend much time tracking.

At least it offers the 127-160 grain bullet choices. Missing in the .243

Wouldn't hold back on shooting moose with 100gr TTSX, its been done and works, but not Option No 1.

6.5CM. Factory 243 barrels are usually not fast enough for heavier bullets. The 6.5CM is the factory setup easy button from light to heavy. If you are concerned about a possible $10 difference in a box of ammo, ignore the fast twist/240WB/25-06/6CM talk and buy a Savage or basic Ruger in 6.5CM

Yeah...at least Tikka and Remington have got with the program and offer 8 twist 243 Winchesters now. Suppose there are other rifles to want besides a Tikka ;)

Good call from Hitzy on how there should be more 6 Creed rifles too. They'd sell.

Only thing that pissed me off with the 6CM and 6.5CM is not too long after they were standardized and released on the public with factory 1/8 twists, Hornady/Sierra/Berger started making heavier VLD's that require a 1/7 twist. So a bunch of #######s like me already had purchased 1/8 rifles in both cartridges, now many are offering 1/7 factory twist for both.
Almost like they took a page out of iPhone marketing.

You already have your bigger game covered with a 30-06 and the 243 is a better choice for varmints than the man bun. The logical choice imo is the 243. It's your choice so get whatever floats your boat.
