I don't know....the last time I checked....the targets at the range are static....last time I checked animals move.....or at least they appear to move sometimes....at 1000 yards all the animal has to do is take 1 step at the same moment you sqeeze the trigger and a double lung has now become a gun shot....

On the archery range I can routinely pop 8 inch balloons at 100 yards......I miss every now and then but I am pretty consistant.....does that give me the right to take 100 yard pop shots at game in the field with bow and arrow.....I think not....IF I did and was successful and put the video up for people to watch I would expect at least 1/2 would have a problem with it.

Obviously IF you haven't called in a Moose and shot it at close range then you probably don't know what I am talking about.....the noises they make when they come to the call....the grunting....the smashing of trees....you have to experience that.....then make your comments.

there is no comparison.....

One is target shooting/hunting......the other is REAL hunting....Yes both result in meat in the freezer....but you cannot argue CLOSER is MORE exciting....

You make the silly assumption that you know more about hunting and have done more hunting than me. I'm not going to argue over the Internet about who's #### is bigger as only idiots do that. I've killed critters with bow and rifle from contact range to 900 yards. I enjoy hunting and I take what ever the day throws at me. I disagree that closer is better and I won't say that long range is the only way to go. I will say that I've never made a kill that I wasn't happy with and the day I did I'd hang it up for good.

So true, I gave up archery a while ago after a wounded deer that took me a day to find and then I only found it by luck.

I call em like I see em....

Calling in Moose or Elk to close range is truly MORE exciting.....obviously you have done NEITHER!!!

I guess the sound of a Elk Bugling as he comes into your cow calls isn't exciting as watching him from 1/2 mile away....totally un-aware to your presense....???

Guess I have been hunting wrong all of these years???

You forgot the site of the steam coming out of its nose and the fear that it may hear the sound of your heart beating in your chest....
 
Here we all are judging others by what we feel hunting should be. To some, its just the fun of being outside, to some, its calling them in close, to others, its making a long shot in difficult conditions. Just as there are those who have opinons about owning firearms, there are those that have opinons about what "real hunting" means.

Some people spend lots of time practicing to make sure the shot they get will count. Some dont. Sometimes both miss. Is one better than the other?

I have shot a moose at 20 yds, and an antelope at well over 300 in a driving rain & wind. Both were exciting. And both were hunting to me anyway, and thats all that counts.

The only persons ethics I have to live with are mine. Same for you. Best if we dont judge each other.

That's the flaw in your argument.

"MORE" exciting to who? My wife wouldn't be the least bit excited by calling in elk or moose. How many big-game animals have you shot over 400 yards? If the answer is "none" or "almost none", then how do you know that calling elk and moose in is "MORE exciting"?

There is no right or wrong, here. As I said before, it just depends on what specifically interests you about hunting/guns/shooting. Different parts of hunting/shooting will be more exciting for different people.
 
One can also make the argument that "more excited" leads to "buck fever" and more missed shots. When you are watching an animal far away you have lots of time to set up etc and when you pull the trigger you will be much calmer than after hearing a moose crash through the woods towards you for the last few minutes.

Thats funny because of all the Moose or Elk hunters I know....if you ever asked them which is more exciting....it is definitely hunting in the CALLING season....

...because your heart is pounding so hard you can hear it with your own ears.....that doesn't happen when your 1/2 mile away.




I actually agree somewhat that the long range is more of a controlled situation(only because the animal is calm and unaware), but it can still be moving......

Lets look at 2 hunts.

To me one is exciting and the other is just REALLY good shooting....to me I would rather shoot groups at 1000 yards for accolades than use animals as targets....to each their own.

I was taught/learned that getting closer is always better....we didn't have long range rifles back in the day....

When I grew up hunting we never had the long range optics, ballistic tables, wind meters, ballistic computers.

We grabbed dad's or granddads' .308 went for a walk in the bush and shot a deer.

Without the aid of technology none of these 975 yard shots would happen.

Whats next?....use a remote Drone plane and take out a animal from 3 miles away with a hell-fire missile?
 
I know of many bad experiences (aka - called them in, close range shots) that went bad and the deer were never recovered.

I imagine there are lots that went perfect.

Its not about "what you do" or "how you hunt" .....everyone has their own preferred way and that's what they practice so that's what they do well.
 
If they didn't gloat and celebrate like they just cured cancer I am guessing that there wouldn't be as much friction given.

It is sometimes like it was the first animal ever taken with a firearm.

As it is, hunt how you want, just remember me when you get your pepperoni sticks made. ;)

Yup...100% agree right there.

Seems a lot of guys think that if its not THEIR style of hunting, then its wrong.

Same guys that have ford pissing on chev stickers or vice versa on their trucks, etc. :rolleyes:
 
I came across a series of interesting pictures yesterday. I didn't want to copy them and then post them so here is the link.

They show, among other things, the delayed expansion that allow Berger bullets to punch through a shoulder prior to expanding. Some people have a difficult time believing this but the pictures, if nothing else, show the delayed expansion.
