243 win m14 barrel?

45acpking touched on a relevant point...cartridge offerings outside the 308 may not be compatible with the m14 gas system design...

This could cause reliabilty and liability issues for barrel or rifle manufacturers..

You can get a 243 M1a custom done by west wind rifles in Erie Colorado . David Sullivan is the owner.
303-828-3823 Price is over $1000.00usd. He used to work for Krieger. They send their customers
to him for custom work they don't want to do. He makes the barrel, installs it and shoots it until it works.

Springfield did it in the 1970s. I used to import them at one time. That was when they used mostly all military
parts in assembling their guns. 243 was offered for a few years by them. They were the only factory guys to
offer it. Maybe they would do it again. I think it really had a lot to do with export to Europe. At the time 308 was
not allowed in semi automatic rifles for civilians, so 243 was offered. Saw a few in Germany around the same
time at waffen frankonia main store.

You might be on to something. Some European countries' gun laws don't let their citizens have military cartridge firearms. Maybe there are oddball cartridge barrels overseas?

Funny to read this thread after recently receiving a pm asking to buy my 243 barrel from a fellow CGNer & then tonite my new gf says why havent you built those couple M14 rifles you have all those parts for? Maybe its time to stop collecting parts & begin building some rifles. Shorty M14 in 243 should be sweet. Cheers fellow CGNers,

Too bad we can't send him an m305

Its a 22". Not much to see - standard profile. Was parkerized when I got it. Now high luster blue. It was a friends's gun -which bought off him 20 some years ago. I know he had it for at least a half dozen years before than that.

He is apparently located in Erie, CO. Have you heard of ITAR? You wouldn't be able to import a barrel from him without getting special permits from the State Dept. It would take months and you'd have a fee of at least $175 to pay, on top of the cost of the barrel. As for shipping your gun down there to get the work done (having him shoot it till it works) - good luck with that. Their is basically no legal way to send a gun to the States, have work done on it and get it back.

Personally if I didn't already have a 243 M14 and wanted one - or a 243 M305 I'd get a donor barrel already in Canada (an M14 or M305 take-off - either of which I could get easily in Canada right now) and get it relined to 243, 7-08 or whatever.

I KNOW you will tell me that it can't be done - too high pressure, etc. Nonsense. I know better.

AS a matter of fact, about 20 years ago I bought a factory new Valmet Hunter in 243. The barrel markings, labeling of the box and the manual were all specifically .243. However when you looked at the muzzle and could see that was a 30 cal barrel factory lined to (when made) .243.

I imagine that all of the relatively few .243 Value Hunters were this way. The factory may, for example have found that they ordered too many .308 barrels and had customers asking for other calibers.

Without a doubt you can reline cheap, plentiful M14/ M305 take-offs to other, smaller bore cartridges.

Here are some pictures of my IDF Parts kit build from Wolverine Supplies....

First the barrel markings (not IDF... I just installed it but I could not wait to show all of you...)

Now a larger picture of the rifle... if photobucket ever cooperates:

Here's a picture of the bolt markings....

As long as you can see, these unicorn calibers CAN be found....

Cheers,

Where did you on earth found that barrel and which body part or parts do you have to trade it for?

You absolutely can import gun parts and without much headache. I used irunguns. Took just a couple of months.

Please cite which laws prohibit the import and export of firearms to and from the USA.

but ONLY if the manufacturer is registered/licensed to do so..... which most of us are aware that many smaller US manufactures and even some larger ones are not. This certainly does present a situation where there is no legal means to aquire the item into canada.
