.243win or 6.5cm for Deer?

Hey fella's

I have the itch for a new deer rifle. I'm torn between .243 and a 6.5cm. I want a caliber that can drop a buck within 200 yds, and is still enjoyable to take to the range on weekends. Any recommendations?

Cheers,
Don't put yourself through so much mental anguish...
Get one of each and don't look back.

20th century vs 21st century. 6.5 cm and a box of 140 gr white box match eldm would be first thing I checked for groups and then likely it will be sub moa so then just order cases of same lot and have fun. If you reload even better. It will be a bit much for coyotes but will also do anything else you wanna do re elk and moose too, barrel life, resale, manbun for the win in wat more categories than the old winchester.

The 243's I had would not shoot 100gr well even so it was lousy bc, i mainly used 80-87gr and kept shots under 250m. Then changed to 308 for several years and dropped deer out to well over 400m.Think that is the most balanced cartridge for our Sika deer and shooting. Since a few years I am using mainly a 6.5CM with 20" barrel doing a bit over 2700fps with 140 ELDM. Impact energy at longer ranges is streets ahead of my old 243 and penetration is very good. Heart lung shot deer will run but not far. Small deer will be fine for 243 but the 10 twist 243's won't have the bc for nice long shots.
Got these two yesterday with H/L shots at 210m,the calf ran roughly 10yds the hind close to 50yds as she was alerted by the first shot. 243 or even 22-250 would have done the same for these small deer and short range. I just prefer to be prepped for the longer shot.

Either will work just fine, but the 6.5 may give you a few more options down the road (long-range shooting, bigger game, etc.)

Don't rule out other chamberings either. I love my 6.5x55, not because I think it's better than a 6.5cm or a 243, 260rem or whatever for deer - I bought it because I love the rifle itself. Sometimes that's more important than the chambering.

Do you only want it for deer? Or double duty for varmints too? Or potentially also hunt other big game with it?
Just deer = either
Deer/varmint = 243 recommended
Deer/other big game 6.5 CM recommended
I'd agree with this.

I never shot any deer with my 243 but man does it just slay coyotes with 70gr Ballistic Tips. It is also good for long range gophers but it is burning a lot of powder for volume varminting.

This year I have used a 6.5CR on a white tail doe and a wolf. The 130gr ELD-M bullet was devastating on both. Neither one ran very far and they both left behind an impressive blood trail.

I bought a 6.5 CM and I’m still bald AF. What a let down.
Can someone please explain the man-bun jokes attached to the 6.5 Creedmoor?

Is it because it recoils mildly and kills game like the "Hammer Of Thor"?

Or is it because of the all the young bucks with small d1cks that have to shoot a 300 Weatherby Magnum or a 338 Winchester Magnum to compensate?........:) LOL

Enquiring minds would like to know!

243 has been killing deer for 70 years along with many other critters it capable of dropping deer out to 350 yards easily superior accuracy the 1000 yard smallest world record group was shot with a 243 variant
the creed is a new flavour that will fade like many other calibres
but it will kill a deer

People who shoot the creed are hipsters. It’s a common yet mildly amusing misconception, not unlike the misconception that shooting a fast thirty means you have a small member. Both slanders are illogical but continually perpetuated by fan boys of one cartridge or another.

The creedmoor has been around for nearly 20 years. With many branches of the military adopting it recently, it won’t be fading away anytime soon.

Btw, that world record group was shot with a 6BR, which is not a variant of the 243 Winchester.

Okay, I get it now, thanks.

And yes I threw in the ridiculous small member comment in there to get a rise from the fools calling the 6.5 Creedmoor a hippy rifle.....:) LOL

I appreciate the clarification.

For the record, the 6.5 Creedmoor is an awesome effective cartridge. Used in Africa to harvest zebra, sable, wildebeest, antelope, kudu, blesbok, alligator and more. Anyone that thinks the 6.5 Creedmoor is not an effective cartridge for any North American big game animal isn't too bright. Now I wouldn't go looking for a big grizzly bear with it, however, I would be confident in stopping and killing a grizzly with a Creedmoor if it was absolutely necessary to save ones life.......:)

The whole 6.5 manbun thing is hilarious at this point too. Maybe in 2014 it was the hipster cartridge, but they've moved on long ago.

6.5cm is now the gun you buy your kid or your wife. Amazing what a decade can do lol

Well said Suther!....:)

I have been shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor for seven years now, it's accurate, no recoil and will harvest any animal I choose.

My wife likes her Savage Lady Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor because it recoils less than her 243 Winchester. We sold the 243 LOL. She has killed several deer with it, the deer don't seem to complain!......:)
