25/06 for coyotes

No you have gone and done it. Bartell has awaken from his slumber and this topic will surely end in some laughs after 10 or so pages.

Let the games begin.

What power of scope were you using to see that coyote at 540 yards nevermind hit the thing?

A friend of mine was looking to use his NEF Handi-rifle (25-06)for 'yotes this winter as a back-up for the "really far away" ones.

I edited my opening statement so I'm not confusing readers on what this thread is about.
My friend allready owns the 25-06! He was considering taking it along as a back-up to his .222Rem.Thank you for suggestions and oppinions thus far,
Cheers,

I know coyotes are tough, but they are still thin skinned animals that are 40 lbs tops. You do not need a 25-06 to kill them, even at 500 yards...

I can't disagree with you T/B but "need" and "usefulness" are not mutually exclusive.
You are certainly right about coyotes being thin skinned but in my experience they can be tougher than deer to kill at times. We shoot lots of dogs over 50 pounds here, and 60 pounds is not unheard of!
I have seen coyotes get hammered hard by various .22 cals and even a .243 and shake it off and run.
There are many reasons not to dismiss a .25 cal for coyotes... extreme range, energy, trajectory, accuracy or drift, and bullet choice.
That said I am looking hard at a .204 Ruger barrel for my Encore.

from what Ive read, you can go wrong with the 204, with most of the currently available bullets. hopefully some stouter bullets will be offered (like the 35 berger and 45 hornady) :)

Oh well, nothing or nobody is perfect.
With the applications that I have used with the 204 leaves me with no regrets
of buying that cal/barrel for my Encore.
I've only been working up 40gr V-max loads and soon I'll give the 32 grainers a whirl,wait a minute....I'm hi-jacking my own thread

500+ yards!!?? wow I am impressed.

I used to call yoddle dogs here in alberta. I used a number of calls, most with great success.

I think the longest shot i ever had to make may have been 50 yards, 75 tops.

I'd just call and let them come to me.

p.s. I used a 22-250 remington 700 varmint rig with a free floated barrel, glass bedded, and a real nice trigger. The thing would shoot under 1/2" at 100 yards. Every dog I hit went down instantly, little or no fur damage either.

lets hijack this thread completely....:D

Yeah I have heard a lot of the bad press on the .204, and it is alll about fragile bullets and bigger varmints... like coyotes and wolves. I still like the idea of .220 swift velocity but with longer barrel life and zero recoil.
I think that the new bullets offered are going to make this a very good mid range coyote smasher... check out the new Nosler .204 B/T..

Nosler Introduces the .20 Cal Ballistic Tip®
April, 5th 2006

NOSLER TAKES THE .204 RUGER TO A NEW LEVEL Reloaders who own the popular .204 Ruger can look forward to premium components in the form of Nosler Ballistic Tip® Bullets and NoslerCustom™ Cartridge Brass—both of which have been announced by the Bend, Oregon manufacturer for 2006. The Nosler .204” 40 grain Ballistic Tip (BC .239) is designed to provide varmint hunters with a very aerodynamic projectile in a popular weight for the .204 Ruger cartridge, while the new .204 Ruger NoslerCustom Brass is made to exact dimensional standards and tolerances using quality materials for maximum accuracy/consistency potential and long case life. Combined, these two components enable the handloader to literally build the perfect load for the .204 Ruger cartridge. Like other Nosler Balllistic Tip® Varmint bullets, the new .204” 40 grain utilizes extremely thin mouthed, highly concentric tapered jackets and form-fitted, pure lead cores for consistent accuracy and violent expansion across a broad spectrum of velocities and ranges. The Solid Base® boattail design, long ogive and polycarbonate tip confer ballistic coefficients substantially greater than bullets of identical weight and diameter. These features greatly reduce wind deflection, enhance long range stability and allow the bullets to be fired at virtually any velocity without sacrificing accuracy or structural integrity. As with all NoslerCustom Brass, the .204 Ruger cases are all weight-sorted and feature flash holes that have been deburred, case necks that have been deburred and chamfered and finally, the same rigorous quality control that premium Nosler bullets have experienced for nearly 60 years. For more information on Nosler’s new .204 Ruger components, as well as a 2006 Nosler® Bullets for Sportsmen™ poster catalog featuring the entire line of Ballistic Tip®, Custom Competition™, AccuBond®, Partition®, Partition HG™, Sporting Handgun bullets, muzzleloading sabots, CT™ Supreme Hunting bullets and NoslerCustom Cartridge Brass, contact: Nosler, Inc., P.O. Box 671, Bend, Oregon 97709, 1-800-285-3701, www.nosler.com.

hijack still going :

if the 204 NBT is as explosive as the 40 Vmax, fur hunters might not be pleased much. if they made it with a bit stouter or a jacket to retard expansion a bit, then it should do wonders, but gopher hunters probably wont be happy.

only time will tell...:)

I have found in most of the other varmint calibers that the Nosler B/T was always less explosive than the V-Max...in many cases I would get more pelt damage from a B/T because they would hold together longer and cause blow throughs and bigger holes.
If these new Ballistic tips are true to form they might be real good coyote medicine.... I am hopefull.
Anybody seen these bullets for sale anywhere? I think that Huntsman needs to do some testing before I buy a new barrel.;)

I'll second that. Shot several dogs with the 32gr. V-Max from 25 to 200 yds. and every one of the damn things exited. Expanded like FMJ's. Bad box of bullets???

So what you are saying is the V-Max exited with very little or no expansion? I have not heard that complaint about the V-Max yet Wildcats. Did the coyotes expire quickly or were there follow up shots required?
We need to start another .204 thread......

Boonerbuck has been shooting some 40 NBT in his LVSF 204

From what Ive read, the 32 vmax and 40vmax/39 sierra have both been explosive expanders on coyotes, with inconsistent results.

Hornady's new 45 gr SP load is surely an answer by them for this issue.

That's exactly what i'm saying. Most shot's were broadside with one or both lungs being hit and a neat little exit hole found on the opposite side. A couple spun circles until they expired but most ran one hell of a long ways. If i didn't see it i wouldn't believe it either.
