25-06... what do YOU use it for?

Well, I'm a Saskatchewan hunter so I've used mine for Whitetails, Mule deer, Pronghorns, coyotes, crows, and other assorted smallish critters at longish distances. Works perfectly for that application. I have been tempted to use it for elk, but have not. That it would kill black bears efficiently I have no doubt. I have mostly used it on big game with Rem 120 PSP and Nosler partitions at 117 -120 grains, and a few 100 grain Nosler ballistic tips. The 100 gr. Bt's at 3200 fps are bombs in this cartridge. Tear coyotes in half. Make craters in whitetails. For things I eat or if I want to use the fur, I prefer stouter and heavier bullets. 87 grain bullets are really good for ruining a varmint's day waaay out there. My 25-06 is a Sako Finnbear AV. I'd say it's accurate, well made, and deadly. Like your Ruger.

A 120 grain Nosler Partition will go clean through a moose hit broadside.
They are very accurate. Terminal performance on any Green Lake Monster will satisfy you.
A black bear proved to be a dramatic kill . . . tried to run, went 10 feet but just did not have the heart!

I have had one for 2 years and never taken it hunting Whitetails. I shoots really good with 100 grain TTSX at around 3300 fps. I was never sure if it would be enough gun if the hit was bad at over 300 yards.
From what I have been reading I might take it out this year and give it a try.

X2 on the Barnes 100 gr TSX boat tails. Shoot bug hole groups and kill whitetails like lightening. I have shot a Sako 25-06 Hunter for 31 years. Killed dozens of big deer and a few caribou with it. Move up to 30 cal for moose and elk.

I use my 257Roberts for deer and deer only. I have better options for heavier game, but wouldn't pass on a moose hunt if all I had was a 25/06.

Here's what I use my 25'06 for:

Easy Lefty you are gonna wear that thing out!!! Nice pictures and nice shooting. Been shooting a Remington 700 in 25-06 for close to 40 years. Had to rebarrel it a few years ago. It has shot one moose, countless Whitetails, caribou, many coyotes an lots of other critters. Love the caliber. In fact I think I will take it out to the range next week after seeing this thread.

OP here:
after all the great replies and pics I am convinced I should bring my ruger along this fall and give it a try.

We rarely take a moose at more than 200yds in my neck of the woods - most shots are 100 or less, so
I definately won't worry about over extending the range of this round.

I'm new to the 25-06 and so far have only used my'n to mount a scope onto. I'll rectify that in a week or so as i just got 2 boxes of ammo (a total ##### to find in my neck of the woods). 115gr Partitions and 117gr Gamekings. It'll be interesting to see how they shoot.

I'm completely out of the quarter bore scene... and the .277" scene too for that matter... sold the guns, sold the dies & brass... done...

The 6mm - 6.5mm - 7mm options I have, cover everything I could possibly want them to do... there are no gaps...

I've used it for antelope, deer. My wife uses one exclusively. Just bought another one, a lightweight for sheep and all around, haven't had one of my own for a few years and I've been kicking myself since I let it go... They really perform better than most people think.

My wife took a huge cow elk at over 250 yards with one shot.

Until there are bullets that are in the .600 bc range, off the shelf, mine will is a dust collector. After shooting a few 25-06 barrells out, it's not a 257 Bee by a loooong shot!.
