It's a death ray on deer. More one shot, DRT kills with my 25.06 than any other caliber. Not too big, not too small, just right for deer sized game.

I have heard People call them by both names.
What I am getting at is size of game and distance.
The fact is that most here on CGN will be owners of multiple rifles and the ownership of a 25/06 for the most part would be designated for deer sized critters while there would probably be a 30-06 (or larger) lurking in the closet for larger game.
Most one-gun owners would just have a 270/308/30-06/303 instead of a 25/06 for big game and would not likely be members here on CGN given their lack of gun looneyness and all around practical approach to the whole matter.

For SW Ontario its great. 75 gr bullets for crows an groundhogs an coyotes. If you venture north once or twice a year its ideal for wolf with 115-120 gr bullets. Suitable for black bear and although light can b used for moose. I've seen enough moose fall from being scratched by a 270

I agree sometimes one really has to resort to convoluted logic to justify ANOTHER new rifle in the stable. But I do it regularly.

I use mine as a specialized rig for pronghorns ( when we still had a SK season ) and mule deer and open country whitetails. I wanted to take it on a Dall sheep hunt in the Yukon, but the outfitter vetoed that. As it turned out it would have been perfect for the sheep opportunity that I had. A bit light for grizzly and moose which were also in season and in the same area that I hunted. I generally hunt deer now with a 7x64 or .308 or .30-06 which do the same job and are a bit more versatile.
My guess is "Control Freak".

I think now that he wanted to sell me the trophy fees for a bonus Grizzly bear and a Moose. I was more interested in goat and caribou as "bonus" animals. It was my first ever guided hunt so I listened. I carried a .308, which he thought was "light but adequate". I would be more inclined now to carry whatever rifle I want, knowing from experience that it will do the job for what I had in mind and the shots I would choose to take. I load 120 grain Nosler Partitions in my 25-06, at 3000 FPS. With those bullets it shoots right through and out the other side of any deer I have taken with it, and would certainly have adequate penetration for sheep, caribou or goats. If that's all I had I would use it on moose, but I admit that grizzly is getting out of my comfort zone.

Oh, and to add to the Fuddy comments, I used a .257 Roberts for years before I got the 25-06. It didn't kill deer any deader, but did it with a bit more panache.
