25-06

25's are kinda pointless in 2019...

I think it's safe to say that the coyotes I shot with my 25-06 this year are just as dead as the ones I've shot with it in years gone past.

I wouldn't replace it with one of those fancy new Creedmoor cartridges that are all the rage in 2019 if you give one to me.

Newer isn't always better just because it's been made popular by all the bandwagon jumpers that fell victim to the marketing hype.

That article is a great endorsement of the 65 Creed over the 25-06. The Creed uses a shorter barrel, less powder, fits in a short action, has less recoil, 30gr more bullet weight, more energy and less wind drift. The bullet drops a little more in the Creed but if you are shooting past 300 yards you should know how to easily compensate for bullet drop.

Be interesting to see an apples to apples comparison between the 25-06 and a 6.5-06 performance type cartridge. :)

Spomer's right on with that one. I really enjoyed my B78 Browning for hunting & running deer target work. Fookin' deadly explosive reactions on raccoons and smaller critters when using 75gr hollow points. It's time for bullet makers to make up some 140 gr big game bullets in .257, and for gunmakers to offer barrels with 1 in 8 twist to suit the longer payloads.

Hell, while they're at it, they should freebore ahead of the chamber a tad to allow for heavy vld bullets & the like.

Everyone has danced around this, so here goes...Years ago I had a M70 chambered in 25-06 with a Douglas heavy barrel. Shot like nobody’s business. Unfortunately, I had to part with it. Nowadays, I have a 257 Weatherby and it shoots very well also. Wish I still had the 25-06, but I’m perfectly happy with the Weatherby.

i would say ... own the whole family! 30-06, 270, 25-06 ! Why not? Weatherby Vanguards are chambered in all three ... for about 2000 on sale you could have a triple play!

I am looking at getting a Savage 110 Storm (stainless) in this calibre next year...just wish the barrel was a full 26" or 24" over its 22", but owell.

I use to be a big 25-06 fan. Owned a couple and an Ackley. Fast, flat, low recoil. Hell on wheels with coyotes and deer. Lots to like, but I don't own a single 25-06 anymore, and likely never will. 257 Roberts or 250AI would appeal way more, if getting back into 25s.

I could never see the point of the 25-06 when the 130 grain 270 win is so great, from a deer hunters perspective.
Call me a hypocrite as I shoot 257 and 270 weatherby and suffer the same redundancy.

When I lived in BC I had a 25-06 built on an A-Bolt action with a Gaillard barrel. Unfortunately I have yet to use it on game (almost 19 years later) and here in the "Eastern Whitetail Woods" it's not particularly practical with it's 26.5" #4 contour barrel. Still, it would be a great rifle if I was to make my way back West (dare to dream) and could get back after deer where the country is more open. These days I have a real sweetheart of a 7x57 that I carry here.
