What can anyone tell me about this wildcat round. I just aquired a Savage model 99 chambered for this. Any hunting experience with this round?

No experience but I can tell you it is the 308 Winchester necked down to 25 calibre. Performance is similar to the 257 Roberts.

Go here. 10 second net search. Too obscure for many to have heard of it much less have one. Add the W's. .ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase/.25-08+.25+Souper.html

My gunsmith should be just about done my barrel in .25 Souper for my Savage 16 bolt-action. I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do. Not that I'm expecting anything that 100 other cartridges can't do; I just like the quarter bores and exotic stuff. I figure I can get it up to the .257 Bob pretty easily, and maybe further. I wouldn't mind seeing pics of your 99. Did they just ream out a .250 Savage chamber, or completely rebarrel a .308?

You won't be able to go to 257 Roberts from 25 Souper simply by rechambering with a reamer, you'd need to first set back the barrel. Otherwise the reamer wouldn't be able to clean up the 25 Souper chamber. It would be pointless anyways, as the two have practically the same case capacities. If that's your ultimate objective, in order to take advantage of standard dies, etc., you should go to 257 Roberts first and skip the 25 Souper. In a Savage 99, can its rotary magazine and action even accommodate the length of the 257 Roberts? Something like 2.850" is the limit I think.

25 Souper to 257 Roberts Improved you could do without the barrel set back.

If I needed max velocity from a 25cal in a short bolt action, I think a 25Souper would be the best option out there. Brass would be a lot easier than a 250AI and would fit right in a SA w/o OAL cramping in the mag box.

With both loaded to the same pressures the 25-08 will not equal the Bob, significantly less case capacity with the 25-08..........now if you really want a short action 1/4 bore screamer the 25-284 is just the ticket. It was so popular at one time that Speer actually had data for it in their manuals.........

I forgot about that one.

I'm just going to stick with the 250Savage or 250AI in my SA.

There was a .25-284 that passed through several different hands on the EE here a few years back. I think that Todd Bartel actually owned it at one point.

The modell 99 left the factory as a .243 and at some point in its life was rechanbered to 25 Souper. I took the rifle as a recent trade, and I just got a chance to take it to the range. The former owner provided ammo, and I got to admit, I am really impressed with the accuracy. This gun is a slick little deer rifle!!

Go to the 24 hour campfire forum and try to contact Rocky Raab. He is a retired gun writer who posts there. He wrote an article about the super one time and from more current comments I believe he still has it. I remember enough of the article to know he spoke very favourably about the calibre.
