250 savage

Nice Rifle Cory, as is your's as well Boo.

Years ago I did see a Ruger ultralight in the 250 and regretted not buying it.
At the time the Roberts was on my want it bad list. Now that I have 2 I think the 250 would make a great companion.

Anyone still hunting with this classic caliber? What do you hunt and what bullet do you use?

As far as your original Question brybenn both people I know that use the 250 hunt with 100 grain soft points for
Coyotes and deer.

I have thought about what I would use if I owned one and the 100gr would the bullet. If reloaded it would be the partition for sure for deer, a 100gr soft point for practice and anything smaller.
My Roberts seems to like a 75gr. hollow points for making metal ring.

I had a 1970's Savage 99A that i took several deer with, my favourite bullet was the Hornady 117 gr RN propelled by W760 . At 2700 fps it was a very deadly combination. Took whitetails from 250 yds to about 20 yds with it. Very effective. I currently own a Ruger M77Mk II stainless full stock carbine that is a lovely rifle that I just don't use, it should go to a new home.

I had a 99a [aluminum spool]that was supposed to be 1-10 twist from all the records I read but it was a 1-14" ! Don't take nothing for granted. It would shoot 100 Speer and 100gr Sierra flat base bullets into an inch and 100gr Hornady's key holed at 100 yards.

Man, those rsi's are beautiful little rifles. I passed on a really nice .308 a while back. The 18.5" barrel was the deciding factor. Had it been 20", I would own it. 20" is my personal limit on barrel shortness because my hearing is bad enough lol.

Yes, those RSI rifles are very nice. I especially like the old tang safety ones which I think is what Cory has. While I agree that they are a little "blasty" in larger calibers, I found that the 22-250 RSI and 243 RSI that I had were fine to shoot. Both the 308 RSI and 270 RSI I had were on the noisy/blasty side, especially the 270 !! I think that Cory got himself an excellent Christmas gift with that 250 Savage RSI rifle.....Should be a comfortable shooter in that cartridge.
I agree with nomad though ........I believe the model would have been better and enjoyed higher sales if it had come with a 20 inch barrel.

I had one in a nice little M77 RSI... never should have sold it... it was a perfect little "cedar swamp" rifle.

Just picked this as a Christmas present for myself, so this thread is great timing

Is it just me or is that the smallest Canada goose ever mounted?

I'm planning on building/assembling two next year. One will be a savage 10 with a 1/10 twist 16.5" barrel sitting in an mdt LSS chassis. The other will be either a 96 or 98 Mauser re barreled with a 1/10 twist 22" barrel with express sights in a nicely figured walnut stock. Very slim stock for walking. The savage will be loaded light for coyotes and crows and such while the other 250 will be loaded for deer with either 100-117 gr bullets. I'll let the rifle decide what it likes.
As my daughter grows she can learn with the savage and ill have my 25/06 re barreled and load it strictly for deer and wolf.
I lost my 1000 yard range so at most my coyote hunting is under 250 yards. Calling often brings them in much closer. Under 75 yards so the 250 savage is perfect for my needs and it's got a proven track record for deer if and when I hunt in a center fire area. I'm in a shotgun and muzzleloader only area for deer.
I love the 257 caliber

'Boo is correct, it's a Cackler

Very nice Christmas present Cory! I’m kinda liking those mannlicher stocked guns nowadays. Maybe a 2018 purchase Hmmm .

I might've even got an envious approval from your Uncle

Nice piece...

Not gonna lie... I miss the epic beard!

Me too, but work said it was a safety hazard and to shave or get a beard net

On topic, looks like H4895 is the preferred powder for 100 gr. bullets? Any other suggestions?

A friend of mine asked me to look for ammo for 250 Savage knowing I would have more luck than them but costwise I have so far recommended a new rifle for the cost of ammo.
